My question comes from reading the description from the specials (no I get the 'only aoe' part). From reading the description it looks like they're all the same thing (except that one is building/droid). What exactly is the difference with these?

It's really hard to say what the effect is intended to be right now, as none of the specials appear to be working the way they should be. Well, pray they are not working as intended anyway. If they are, these things fall into the same category as medical forage and kip up shot. As far as the weapons go, we'll just have to wait and see what the actual stats are. All test center weapons were greatly enhanced beyond their normal craftable values (remember when TC-3 went up at first, before they started issuing "mid level" weapons?). The shot animations are decent enough though, even if the new flame thrower's flame looks a lot more like a pale violet to me than blue.
