I like the idea a lot, but we're already quite limited to melee range. I wish we would get some better meleedefenses from having unarmed 4. I think this would be a good idea as part of a complete revamp, but for some of the more immediate fixes, I hope to get some better ranged weapons. Still, this is a good idea and something to be explored for sure!

It'd be cool, but difficult to implement. A Riflebutt attack would simply be a case of "Copy/paste" of the code for the effect of the PistolMeleeDefense skill, with a new animation. A bayonet would need a load of new weapon models/skins, possibly a new weapon type etc. After all, if the assault rifle is a carbine or a rifle, then what's to stop a dabbler picking up that box and using the bayonet attack on a T21 or a Laser Carbine? Unless the Bayonet was an attachment, though then it'd be like a second equipped weapon and there'd be a set of new complications there.

This is slightly off-topic, but if we do end up getting a melee attack where you hit the enemy with the butt of your weapon, we should really make sure it doesn't have a horribly embarassing name like "buttstroke".

Great idea. I like the bayonet thing. Minor correction though"Deadly at range and close up." We are NOT deadly beyond 17m, close up? yea. . . . we can inflict damage if we are lucky and don't get K'ded.
Nottrying to flame. I'm just irked that beyond 17m I might as well be armed with a nerf gun (some would argue I already am.. . . .)
I would love to see the graphics and a group of commandos with a squad leader say "Fix bayonet's!"
Unfortunately ALL of our weapons are close range (sadly thatincludes our grenades, but excluding our very inaccurate, near worthless, way too expensivelaunchers).

this has acutally been suggested a couple of times, and falls under the much covered category of "why do we need unarmed 4 if we don't use it."
Good Idea though, keep them coming, I could definately see a bayonet (vibro bayonet?) attached to an assault rifle if we ever get one. Would work great in there as a special attack. I envision novice commando giving you "buttstroke" that would act as a dizzy or a stun and maybe the 3 box in the mythical AR tree giving you "bayonet stab" or "bayonet slash", basically a melee move that could act as a posture down or something, kinda like lunge.
I dunno, just a thought, only way to find a great idea is to throw them out there.

Oooh a bayonet on the end of the flamer, I can poke at the mobs with the stub of molten metal.

Hmmm. Bayonette on a flamer? What's the use? Really? I seriously doubt the bayonette would outdamage the flame thrower and if it did. . . . THAT would be sad. The bayonette would probably have the same range restrictions as the flame thrower specials.
In the military we are taught that bayonet's are for when you run out of ammo, or for really close range work.
The reality is that most of us considered the bayonette useless except to open our field rations with. Of course there WAS crowd control. A line of jabbing bayonettes will make a mob back up kinda quick.

i think its a great idea many rifleman would agree aswel coz i had thought about bayonets and even rifle butting aswel ok we would still get owend by swords man and other melee typesbut it would be nice if like a bayonet or /riflebutt would have like +melee defense or something???
(how mnay film and stuff have u seen when the good old riflebutt came into use!!! ouch thats gota hurt
