Not to get folks hopes up, but part of the delay in the sandbox is that they are hoping to upgrade the plans so they can allow us to fit in a few more testers...
I'd still like to help test, if the chance should arise. Thing is, with my school/work schedule, would I be able to? Will there be set testing times, or will the sandbox be open 24/7 during the testing?

So....when is JTL getting launched so we can hear more about the combat revamp.
I keep hearing that it's still on schedule to launch at the end of the month...And the Devs have repeatedly told the Correspondents that the Revamp is the next thing item that takes up all of their efforts (orginally we were told many months back it was Jedi > JTL > Combat Revamp...so if they hold true to this, we'll see as much attention put into the Revamp as we did in Jedi and as much as they are currently putting into JTL...They have said repeatedly that there is nothing else they plan on working on besides the Revamp...

Assuming this timeline holds true...Which in actually, the combat balance has been in talks for a LONG time....As in it was supposed to happen before Christmas...Of 2003. The announcement of the delay of the CB was done in...June I think? And only after players were litterally screaming for an update.
I think it would be extremely narrowminded to assume that after JTL comes out, they wont still be working on the many myriad of problems it has (without going to far over the NDA).
You may have missed this in another post, but JTL has an entirely different team that will be managing the day to day updates and fixes...it's won't be the typical SWG staff...those folks taken to work on JTL over the last few months will return to SWG...that's why it's not so narrowminded to assume this...
Honestly, I am thinking about 3 months minimum before they start on the CB/R after JTL is launched. Assuming JTL is going to meet its target launch of the end of this month, that puts the CB/R starting at the beginning of March, and maybe not hitting the live servers until, say May or June of '05? Once it does hit live servers, can you imagine how buggy it is going to be? On top of this, they are allowing only 6 players per class into test it? 6 players per class can't possibly report back problem areas in a reasonable amount of time. At minimum, 50 players per class to report to the correspondent on a biweekly basis, who then cuts the fat and reports back to the devs. The communication skills of the correspondent will absolutely play the biggest part here, and I think Garvin is up tothe task.
I am thinking it will be within a month of JTL's launch that the Sandbox will be up in some fashion...And it will be within a couple of weeks from JTL's launch that all the docs will be available publically....Once the Sandbox goes live, depending on how long the Revamp Beta goes, it could be a couple of months before it hits live...that means by middle to end of December (maybe early January, we could see the Revamp go live...Remember...it's not just Combat professions that are getting 6 testers...non-combat professions are also being invited to help with the Combat Testing...the Tailor Sandbox testers won't be focusing on Tailor issues on the sandbox, they'll be focusing on Combat as well...that's 6 people multiplied by 32 to 36 communities...And they have said they are trying to make room for us to add more...50 players per class would actually INCREASE the problems at first...We are going to have specific tests we are going to be running at a fast pace...it will be hard enough to manange 6 people let alone 50 people...For those involved in JTL Beta, you'll understand when I say that testing specific issues has actually gotten a bit more muddled the more people that have come in (in my opinion) mainly because more people tend to go in different directions and cause problems and invalid results in the testing...
I am trying not to sound too pessimistic here. But look at the Jedi revamp....This was ONE class. It tookTWO major patches to do, numerous hotfixes, and it is STILL buggy as hell. Look how long it took them to put that one together. How many months behind is the FF that Thunderheart said Commando's were going to get in relation to the CB/R?
I'm glad you brought up the Jedi Revamp...that's the perfect example of what I'm expecting to happen...not the bugs or the issues...but the attention...the devs have promised more attention to the Combat Revamp then they did to the Jedi Revamp...If that's the case, I expect the Combat Revamp to go very well...Also look at the Jedi testing...it's had tons of people, not a focused smaller group...that's a reason I believe it may have gone the route it did...Our 6 Sandbox testers will be focusing in on Commandos Vs. the world...Personally, for the massive amount of changes that the Devs made to the Jedi system in such a short amount of time (2 publishes) I'm impressed with the amount of energy and effort they put into it and what came out of it...Remember, they also had much of their staff working on JTL at that time...The Revamp won't have that big split like that...Those SWG workers who spent time on JTL will be back working on the Combat Revamp...So in essence, the Revamp will get more Dev and Programmer attention then the Jedi Revamp did...And the plans for post Revamp are still "Specific Profession Revamps and retooling" so the Revamp won't be the end...it's not like they are going to do the Revamp then move on to something else...they are going to do the Revamp, then stick around to make sure it worked...
I give these yahoo devstwo months to show me the money. If at the end of November, something isn't concrete, I am gone.
ah cripes, the black helicopters over my house again, gotta scram.
