Thread: What commando is seriously lacking

What do you think of when you hear a Commando. Persoanlly, i see big big explosions and infiltration. We have the explosions down(although damage-wise, not so much) but still need the infiltration. I've come up with two ideas for this concept.





  • (First). I origionally thought that giving the commando a similar ability to the way 'Cover-up' for riflemen and 'Force Cloak' for jedi, kinda combining the two. I came up with a short term ability(15 sec at Novice, 30 sec at Master) where the commando would dissappear from radar and the actual screen(entering a 'stealth mode') where they wern't seen. But unlike force cloak, the higher the con of nearby enemies are, the higher the chance they could detect you sneaking by(although initiating combat would break the mode as well). From my point of view(and all ready implemeted actions) this would be entirely possible, and give commando a unique ability.

  • (Second) Then, I came up with a more 'fun' idea but equally cool. It would allow commandos the ability to desguise themselves as aNPCs, although running, combat, crafting, etc would break this. It would only be able to initiate while other player characters are not around and can't see the desguising take place. Might be hard to code but a cool ability to have.





If we got such a power, i would definatly find all parts of a commando fulfilled, and would be happy. Feedback on this welcome and appreciated.

I think the fact that you are also a Master Smuggler is shining through. Personally, I would have been happy to come back after a year AWOL and have found the issues from back then fixed instead of new problems and a drop in perceived combat power. The only reason I say perceived is because I have not been able to test thoroughly what I have read on the boards yet.

Actually ive been a commando much longer than smuggler, and i dont see a reason for them to need it at this point. I've always thought this should be given to commandos, when i aquired commando a long time ago. Commando is the true profession for me(smuggler for the top-notch crowd control :smileytongue It was just recently that i found a way to express it in a prefered manner(with examples and such). It would actually be good to have nowadays since we currently have no specials because of the CU...

how far will thirty seconds of invisible get you though? is that really enough?

Long enough for me to slip into a crowded cantina/base ect. and let lose with imp det and One really big flamethrower.

Exactly. the times are definatly up for change, i just didn't want to sugjest something too long as Jedi could complain that it took away from their Force Cloak.

I think your two wants are a little over the top.


First of all, while a modern day commando is skilled at sneaking/hiding in the jungle, the commandos in the SW universe don't seem to. By definition, SWG commandos are up-close-and-personal fighters with little need for hiding. They are on the front lines where the poodoo is flying.


The second wish doesn't make a whole lotta sense. Why look like an NPC?

Actually I use to sneak up on Rebel NPCs all the time.

Ah I was like Sam Fisher with a Flamethrower.

Anyway that's fun, and one of those fun dreams we all have. I've leanred ya can't expect much from the Devs so ya gotta figure out how to do this stuff otherwise.

I think the question that needs to be asked first is "What is a commando?" There seem to be conflicting opinions of what it is. Compare it to a modern day warrior and I would think of a Delta Force operative or something similar.

as I said, the second suggestion was more of a fun fact I thought of, nothing really serious. And as for the real life commandos being different from SWG commandos, sure. But we don't get any specials besides the an Auto-AOE. The Definition of a Commando* is:

  1. A small fighting force specially trained for making quick destructive raids against enemy-held areas.

  2. A member of such a force.

This could be interpreted two ways: Commandos arn't nessescarily stealthy, just strong, or they are stealthy and strong. But right now, neither is fulfilled. Sure commandos dont 'need' the ability, but it would add to the experience of being an elite commando and give us aunique ability that would make the profession more fun and fulfill the definition.



* So if neither of these are followed, the name should be 'Heavy Weapons Expert' or something.

Honestly the state Commando is in now I was thinking what use would it be to me?

I am Smuggler too so Commando is attractive because I have all the prereqs. Being as the splash damage is just one point now I would say AoE states is where it is at. Dropping peoples defenses, KD, attack slowing, rooting, snare, state resist debuffand if they fix it, a real mez.


I have been seriously thinking about taking Commando on because I want to get in the GCW. I might Master or do something like x44x, and some pistol for accuracy, disarming shot, warning shot etc. Of course I'll have to drop dancer yet again


So maybe Commando x44x, rifle 4xx3, pistols 44xx, and Master Smuggler. I wouldn't have root when they "fix" concussion shot and I would have a snare though in restraining shot. I am thinking spamming imp disarming shot in a support role with a Commando weap could be real PITA too.
