just so you know, i just read BravenIrishes post, and it brought back a bunch of very bitter, and very wonderful memeries.
Ryubusi, you bring a smile to my face every time I read your post, your absolute insanity reminds me of a lot of people I served with Algiz being one.
So, in honor of all those that have come befor, all those who now are, and those to come, I'm asking Garvin to sticky the tank thread.
Damn i'm crying now

It seems damn near all of us in this forum are military, ex-military, or nearly went military.
I curse my bloody eyesight; I grew up wanting to be a combat pilot for the Air Force, but my poor vision robbed me of that dream.
God, I'd just about kill to have the vision needed to fly. Unfortunately, all inquiries I've made about lasik surgery and flying come back negative; even with lasik, I would apparently be grounded. Thus we see themain reason I never went military. Anyone on this forum who is/was in the Air Force, and you have experienced the thrill of piloting an F-15 or F-16, I envy you. And to note, if you could pull some strings to borrow a two-seat trainer to take me upfor one flight, I'd be your friend for life.
Worse, from what I've been told (dunno if it's true or not), but I've heard you could fly and get your helmet visor ground to your prescription if you were 20/70 or better; I'm 20/80.
I have thought about the army itself before, lately more than ever, but I don't think it would work for me. As my posts may have indicated, I have an extremely short temper, and I'm prone to expressing my anger violently. So, the first time a drill sergeant was to yell in my face, I'd likely be going to Levinworth (sp?) or worse. But, even though the army itself probably isn't for me, if World War III broke out tomorrow, I'd probably be one of the first people at the recruiting office.
As it is, I'm somewhat of a paramilitary nut; I have camo fatigues (three or four different sets, actually), army-issue cots, mess kits, canteens, shovels, defused grenades, etc... Hell, for years I carried my sparring gear in an army-issue duffel bag (my sensei was an army ranger himself).
I hope the best for Braven, I really do. From the way his post was composed, I can see myself in his place very easily.
Dunno if it warrants something as insane as The Tank Thread being stickied, but it makes me feel good to know that if nothing else, I can bring a smile to our fighting men and women, past and present.

I actually signed up for the Reserves here in Canada but the buracracy of it all worked against me such that I could not get approved in time to make basic at a time not during school, and have since then lost most of my faith in my country's military because of speaking to friends who were in or involved with it. Buracrats, dammit.

Not quite military, but...my great great great great (4) grandfather fought for the north, I had 4+ Great uncles fight in WWII, and my dad was in Operation Desert Storm (KC-10 captain). Ohh, and I was born on base.

Ryubushi, regarding eyesight and lasik surgery...
I'm not sure how far you can go with this or if it's already too late... the military is finicky once you're in the late 20's and trying to join up.
Lasik surgery isn't authorized for US Navy/Marine pilots. I'm not certain with the US Air Force, but I would *assume* (and we all know what assuming does) that Lasik surgery isn't authorized for them also. One of my Sergeants went to get his eyes fixed, but I can't recall the procedure's name. What I do remember him saying was that the doc said Lasik was not authorized for naval aviators since the long term effects are not known. One of the big reasons why is that a slice is made on the front of your eyeball. With the G's pilots are expected to pull, they're not sure how in the long term this will be for the better of the pilot.
There's an older, safer procedure to correct your vision, but it takes much, much longer (several months, if I remember what my Sgt. said).
