Thread: HAR: Just how bad is it?

I would like to know just how well the HAR standard and special attacksworks when compared directly to the FT. Can someone with at least lvl 4 Acid line comment on this? Please assume no resist armor with no DOT affects. This is just straight damage values.

I am painfully aware of the HAR speed and accuracy problems so please don't bringit up Lets just assume that they work the same as the FT for now.

I believethe specials aremore or less identitical discounting armor, resists and the DOT. From what I've seen, the HAR does about 20% less base damage than the FT, so you could expect to see that translate into the specials as well.

Since you have listed all of the worst problems, assume the flamethrower does twice the minimum damage and 300 more points top end.

I'll sell you my HAR which cost me about 30K after the slice for 5K and you can see for yourself. Its only been fired a handful of times, practically brand new.

The problem is this. For one its acid damage which is good, many a nasty critter is vulnerable to acid, but I don't care to get within 16 meters of them with an extremely long delay between shots without a dot.

The only way the HAR becomes viable is to give it a much longer range. Even if they gave it Armor rating of 3, and upped the damage it still wouldn't be that good of a weapon. Its a slow melee weapon wiht large delays. Large enough that its impossible to kill anything with it because you'll die well before you get that second or 3rd shot off(within melee range)

Then, consider that HAR Speed modifiers do not work (meaning you get +whatever to HAR Speed as you advance which has absolutely no effect on your fire rate).

Consider that not only is the HAR far less damaging than the flamethrower, its specials have about twice the delay time and NEVER get faster due to the borked speed mods. Even if the speed mods weren't borked, the flamer would still vastly outdamage the HAR.

Honestly, I use the HAR all the time. It's rare that something has both Acid and Heat resists... So I go with what hurts it. Yeah, I'll dump the burns onto it if it's a hard fight, but if it's Acid vulnerable, the HAR does it's job.

Is it as good as the FT? No. Should it have a DOT as well? Probably, but only if it doesn't stack with the Fire DOT.

Is it still a good weapon? Hell Yes.

You must be using a creature to tank or something, otherwise you're killing rabits that die in one shot.

Groups, man, Groups.... it's massively *multiplayer*...

No, we don't solo so well... the HAR is a "social" weapon =)

Does anyone know of a creature with about 1k - 1.5k HAM that is vulnerable to acid damage?

I'm serious. I'd hunt those all day.
I love my HAR, it's just that I get tromped on when I fight big stuff like fambas with it.

Thanks for the quick responses. Yes as I said I am quite aware of the speed and accuracy problems. What I was looking for (and got) was that when you take away the bugs would the HAR be a good situational weapon for those times that Heat is highly resisted. That still doesn't mean you don't drop a FlameSingle1/2 on there first for the DoT...even if the DoT gets changed so it acknowledges armor its still a DoT. But for the damage afterwords that come from regular attacks and special attacks keep in mind this is BEFORE armor. If they have 75% Heat with armor 1 it doesn't matter what damageAPPEARS to be happening. The simple fact is more of the Acid damage is getting through the armor. This will be more of a factor as if you notice on the notes on TC right now the armor layers have been "fixed". This could mean we see more and more heat resistances which will make the FT less and less useful (although still our mainline gun).

And yes i know some of us can't live with the bugs but this is a perfect world all things being equal kind of a discussion

I have to agree with BEBHaven. Sure, the HAR sucks 1-on-1, but when you're constantly going on large hunting groups (like my PA is always doing), you want to use the weapon best suited for the creature you are fighting, right? Otherwise, you get minimal or no xp (due to lack of real damage inflicted), and since you aren't inflicting as much real damage as you could if you used a different weapon, you're not givingmuch value to your hunting party.

Example:

Went on a Rancor hunt on Dathomir last night. All, and I mean all forms of Rancor have 100% resistance to heat, and most have only 30% resist to Acid. Sure, flamecone 1 and single 2 DOT's helped with killing them faster, but unless I switched to another Commando weapon that could actually do real damage, I got 0 xp for the kill, anddidn't do the group a whole lot of good cause I wasn't using my arsenal effectively.

You know what I really hate about the HAR? You can't see it do anything, and the only you hear sounds like a spit-ball fight. I'm big on eye-candy . After all, if cool explosions, and discharges aren't there, I may as well go back to playing MUD or Infocomm games.

OK that make sense.

I just don't like grouping, there is always that one fool who runs in and shoots the lair first, crap like that.

Grouping for PVP is fun though, but PVE, I'd rather die because of my own foolish mistake, not someone elses.

The HAR's as bad as takin ya sister to the Prom.. that's how bad it is.

But here's a question... The trusty FT is fast, sexy and can shoot a stream of burning fuel onto the target <the DOT>. The HAR is slow, dumpy, and can shoot a stream of ACID onto the target. If anything was going to do horrible, disfiguring wounds over a matter of time, wouldn't a stream of ACID be just as good as a stream of burning chemicals? Hey, if they're gonna make me dance with a frumpy HAR sometimes they should at least give me acid that sticks to the target.
