Thread: Define exploit...

I'm not a CM, never been one, never will be one. Would someone please explain to me the issue of "poisoning through walls" which affects attacking players in a base? Does the CM community consider it an exploit? I'm just wondering because a group of players on our server used this as justification for exploiting turrets as a recourse for people using this supposed exploit.

It depends on what you mean by poisoning through walls. If you mean actually throwing a poison through a wall, this would bea bug which should be reported. If you mean throwing an area poison and hitting somebody outside a wall, but the area of effect going through the wall, we are not sure. We are trying to get a straight answer from the devs if this is or is not an exploit, but I do not believe we have an official statement from the devs one way or the other about it.

I would say though that if you feel particularly strongly about somebody doing it, you can fill out a CS ticket or report the person. No guarantee that anything will become of it, but if nothing else you will get an official answer as to the opinion of the CSRs about it (which may or may not match the Dev's opinion, which in turn may or may not reflect either the player base or the reality of the situation).

I agree with JFang. I'm a former BE, and we've dealt with this kind of issue for a long time--the devs (and perhaps the community at large) don't necessarily like something, but it's working the way it was programmed. I think that's the situation with poisoning through walls. It seems like it would take an entire rework of how the collision detection operates to fix it at this point; probably not something the devs want to spend cycles on, so they might explain it as "these are airborne nano-viruses specifically designed to slip through minute imperfections in structures in order to infect targets within."

Ok, so it turns out that somehow you can have a friend go up to a base covert and duel the CM. The CM poisons their friend and everyone in the base gets poisoned.

Those aren't the only potential targets. In my mind, here is the range of targets from non-exploit to exploit -

  • Non-incapped enemy combatant

  • Random critter wandering outside the base

  • Incapped, but alive enemy combatant

  • Corpse of enemy combatant

  • Someone you dueled for the sole purpose of aquiring a target

In my mind, the first is clearly not an exploit. The last clearly is. There is a lot of debate about the ones in the middle. This is a case where dev input on what is intended would be very useful.

Yes, this is incredibly cheap. (I would invest in a covert scanner, but I'm not entirely sure how GCW baste fighting works so this might now be applicable.)

I personally would report these people if you can prove it, taking a screen shot or two if possible. Like I said don't expect anything to come of it, but if enough people complain about this person you might get either this (possible) bug changed, or at least an account temp-banned. However, we have no official line from the devs about it, so who knows what will happen?

Edit: What Happymob said, only typed slower and less eloquently.

Well the scanner thing doesn't work when the "friend" is actually a member of the opposing faction.

You will find few people who disagree with that statement here, Dolik. There are a few, butin general people hereagree that poisoning into a base from outside is kind of... bad. Many of these same people take advantage of it mind despite not liking it mind you, but many (if not most) people hereagree with you.

Your AoE poisons and diseases will only hit valid targets within the area. Overts, covert members with TEFs, people you are dueling, creatures, and NPCs of the opposite faction. No one else will get touched by the poison/disease.
