So heres my situation. I am currently a 4/4/4/4 Medic working on the App xp to get Master. I was going to go Doc, but looking at the forums, I would really rather not just be a BuffMonkey (tm) for the rest of my medical career. I WANT to go out, see the world, hunt Krayt and a few Death Watch. So here is my question:

Is Combat Medic the career for me, or should i just keep my Medic as a secondary and pick a combat skill (working on the pistol tree in marksman now).

Thank you for your time.

CM is fun! Personally, I have a blast doing area heals.. It doesn't seem to ever get old.... CM's are always in demand in tough dungeons like Deathwatch. However, you need to play your support role... people are gonna hate you if you fight with rifleman all the time and let them die.

I play master doc/cm and I love it... I can buff, heal, and poison.

Well, it's entirely dependent on what you do.

1) A doctor is not just a "BuffMonkey (tm)". In fact, that mentality (and the people who play doctors that way) are part of the reason people think doctors are underpowered as compared to a combat medic (which may or may not be true, another discussion for another thread). In PvP combat, a *good* doctor (as opposed to a "BuffMonkey (tm)") is worth his or her weight in gold. The same is in PvE combat, although to a lesser extent. So, if you want to be a doctor, you can see the world and be welcome in almost every combat group.

2) Combat medic is a lot of fun. It is not fair to say that you will see any more or less of the world as one. Combat medic is a larger SP sink, which limits what you else you can do. Combat medics also have more overhead (harvesting resources, crafting, carrying stuff around), which may or may not be what you are looking for.

3) Combat classes are the staple of combat. If you want to adventure, it is hard to go wrong with a pure combat profession.

It's all dependent on what you want to do. If you want to be the primary fighter, go with a combat class. If you want to solo, a combat-doctor works nicely. If you want to be a pure support character, get combat medic and doctor. Etc. There is no single optimal template. I would suggest you just pick one (doctor, because that's what you were initially inclined to do), and play with it. If you find you don't like how it "feels", you can always drop the skill blocks.

Just keep in mind the forums are a very limited perspective of the game. No matter what you hear on the forums, the doctors are no more buff-monkies than combat medics are zerg-poisoners than smugglers are slice-monkies. It's all about how you play your character (as the devs rightly pointed out in our last 19 answers response... ).

If you truly want groups to love you be a CM that dabbles in doc to get revive.

I did that for awhile and was quite happy with it.

thanks for the replies folks. After poking around I think I may go 0400 doctore for the revives, a couple of lines into CM and then play around with pistoleer with any points I may have left. I figure if i master either Doc or CM there will be things I wish I had, so im going to mess around with a planner and see what kind of mix and match I can pull off.
