Thread: What does Combat Medic mean?
So, the stain that our former president, Bill Clinton left on us is now obvious. No, not that one… I’m talking about the stain that makes people completely ignore the meaning of simple words like “is”.
I have read posts and threads that all cheer and slap jeers into the combat medic’s faces now that some “nerfing has finally happened” to that profession, stating that the combat MEDIC should be just that, a MEDIC… a menial support class that should’ve mainly been restricted to healing, but has long out-lived their daddy’s britches.
Case in point, I only ask for a definition to the following terms, so that I may better understand how you think I should’ve been playing my Combat Medic for the last 13 months…
Here are the titles that the profession gains in each tree…. Please, feel free to post your incredibly intellectual definitions to each:
(Might need a real dictionary for this one).
—(Feel free to break this definition down to each individual word, so that my untrained mind will understand your superior intellect… Chemical—what’s that? Warfare--? And if you feel it’s necessary, Expert--?)
—(if you can’t get this one, part of the word comes from “Toxin”, define what a toxin is please)
(Break it down for me, please)
At the master level, the professions title becomes MASTER COMBAT MEDIC.So please, don’t stop… Define those words… Master-? Combat-?, and Medic—if you feel so inclined.
In closing, it’s amusing to me that a bunch of what I will call “highly spirited, and all knowing people” will stuff a profession back into the healing kitchen because their title has the word “medic” in it.What about “combat”?I look at that word, and I think, well, combat = fighting… hmmmm… medic = healing… ok…. With the other titles under the profession, you get a character that can, (uh oh, going out on a limb here)… “fight” AND “heal”. What would they fight with, you ask? Oh… well, hmmm, two of the titles do refer to chemical-related items…hmmmm, whatever. The only profession that should be fully supportive in healing is the doctor, and that too is arguable! When did you ever see Hawkeye, or Honeycutt, or any of those other guys on M.A.S.H. run into battle to heal their comrades?Ummm, like NEVER!They were always telling jokes, and making booze as safely far away from the war as possible. But, I know… you know more than me… so, let me hear your higher thinking, fix my far inferior mind…

"We all come here for one central reason -- to change the way we feel. To either accomplish something, or to avoid something, matters only as a means to change the way we feel. To try to make sense of a small world, when a larger one makes no sense at all. Some are called through the portals of Dereth ... some are pushed. All of us, no matter how lividly we deny it, are Vagabonds. We vary only in how efficiently we are able to waste our time. In the end, it is only a game, and its only purpose, is to change the way we feel".
Traditionally, a Combat Medics primary purpose is first aid in the combat zone. They stabilize soldiers till they can receive the medical care they need. Actual combat is secondary.
My uncle was a Combat Medic in the Vietnam War. He was trained in basic warfare just as any other infantry soldier. He carried a rifle and a sidearm. However, during actual combat, he rarely got off a shot because he was busy getting to wounded. When he did use a firearm, it was usually for suppressive fire.
I was a Combat Engineer in the army. I never saw any combat, but that wouldn’t have been my primary concern even if I did. All that "combat" meant was that I would be deployed within a combat zone. Chances were high that I would only see the battlefield after all the fighting was over.
Of course that was real life and this is a Star Wars game.
As far as poisons, I have no clue what the Devs were smoking when they came up with that one. Not that I think CMs shouldn’t have offensive power, but I would have never thought of them a Chemical Warfare specialists.
Remove the poisons and I believe CMs come close to the description. However, that ends up being a sad thought considering the skill points it takes to master CM.
I believe CMs should be a support role and that is how I play one. Unfortunately there is not really enough support there to justify all those skill points. I was hopping that the Devs would pump up the support part when they nerfed the poisons. There is so much they could add, but that is a totally different thread.
I wouldn’t get hung up on the word "Combat". I sure wouldn’t use it as a reason I should be able to beat someone whose only purpose is combat. If someone can’t take the loss of uber offensive power, I suggest they train in a profession that it was meant for. Melee weapons and firearms are way more fun anyway. However, I wouldn’t let the Devs think that CMs are now balanced in any way.
