Hi All. I just recently unlocked and Im trying to decided what template to make my main. I had origionally concidered going back to Master Doctor/Master Rifleman/Novice scout but it just doesnt seem appealing to me anymore... I know what your thinking...
"You dont find power appealing?"...
Well i know how good that template is but I am just not the type of person that likes to be the same as everyone else... so i decided to go withsome sort ofMaster pistoleer/doctor template... I know doctor is a hugely popular profession, but since i have a jedi to look out for, I have to keep doc.
Well, hard times have befallen the pistoleer, what with the pistol nerfs, bleed nerfs, and defence stacking nerfs, that brings me to the reason i am posting. Considering the low thedamage-per-second of pistols is, would it be worth dropping master doc (and keeping as much of doc as i can) and picking up 0/0/0/4 CM? I have used the character builder on www.swgcenter.comto come up with the following template:
Master pistoleer
Doctor 4/3/4/0 (or 3/4/4/0)
CM 0/0/0/4
I really dont know much about CM except what i have read in the last couple of hours on this forum, but I do know that CM poison stats (tick time and potency multipliers) are based on the Ranged Healing tree which i dont plan on getting. I understand that the poisins i throw wont be uber, but im just looking for some xtra damage to add the my pistol fire.
The down side i see to this is that i will no longer be buffing for around 2200 a stat (mid grade packs with food, 110 med, and +25 clothes)... Im guessing my buffs will be closer to 1800 with my current packs, and if i wanna get back to over 2000 (if its even possible) Ill have to start buying the uber 30k-a-pop packs... plus i will have to either drop the ability to rez, or cure disease (depending on if i go 3/4/4/0 or 4/3/4/0), neither of which ill be happy to see go.
So would you guys consider this an even trade off? What kind of extra damage can i expect to see at 0/0/0/4 cm? I'm not big on PvP, or at least i havent been in the past, too busy grinding out 27 professions, so at this point im more concerned with the PvE aspect. Can i expect to at least get somewhat closer the damage-per-second of the more uber combat classes like Rifleman and Swordsman? Any thought would be helpful.
Thanks!

The short answer is, "no, this is not a valid PvE template". I personally would take either MD-MPistols, or 4440 doctor-MP-a few skill points for scout or artisan for harvesting resources. A more in depth answer is:
At 0004 combat medic, you are basically using poisons and stims at just above written strength. This means that your individual poisons will do give or take 350 damage per tick, or 35 damage per second. Your areas poisons will need to be custom made, and will do give or take 150 damage per tick, or15 damage per second. Against weak to medium creatures, your average high level marksman or brawler will do more damage in PvE. (In fact, there is a fair chance that having the extra 300 buff points from a 4440 doctor will actually make you more effective in PvE, as you can save a few seconds of healing occasionally which lets you spam two more specials...)
Furthermore, since you have no range or speed skill, you will be tossing a poison from 40m give or take, and the act of throwing will take several seconds. At this range, you can spam pistol specials, which will almost undoubtably make throwing poisons a waste of time against everything except creatures with exceptionally high armor and resists.
Even if you get +25 combat medic effectiveness from tapes and a Nyax necklace, you will only be doing 400 damage a tick, or 40 damage per second, which isn't that muchbetter.
If you are doing PvP combat, 35 (mind) damage per second is arguably good or bad. (Please, let's not get into *that* numbers argument here.) However, in PvE, 35 damage per second is... moderate at best. It *will* let you do hit-and-run tactics against some creatures, but you will likely find yourself killing creatures with fan shot long before you even notice the poison affecting anything.

If you are going to havea tank wiht you then I suggest going 0400. Being able to mind heal your tank is a huge advantage in pve, tossing weak poisons wont make a difference especially against higher lvl mobs.

Funny, I was thinking the exact opposite. It is only against higher level mobs, the ones with heavy armor and 90% resistance to everything that everybody does practically no damage to, that a weak poison with 30 damage per second starts becoming useful...

Assuming you aren't doing PvP, and assuming you only want to increase your damage output...
You might want to consider 4004 CM and 0340 doctor. This will allow you to increase your range considerably, and make your poisons do 75% more damage. A 500-550 tick poison will augment your damage against mid-high to high level mobs rather well. (The lack of a good areapoison and the slow throw time will limit your ability to poison manyenemies at once though, so you won't have the same damage amplification effect against multiple enemies that 4404 and master combat medics have.)
Note that you do lose the ability to cure poisons and diseases though...

You'd actually do better as:
4404 CM
4030 Pistoleer (or whatever pistol trees are best)
0120 Smuggler (Slicing Terminals for cash, but that could be traded for meningfull combat skills)
Now you can poison your mob and then feign death just kicking back untill it's time to body shot it to kingdom come.
But I do have my doubts about this template as well I must admit.

I don't mean to highjack this thread but the original poster has the same idea as me-sorta. And I also want some feedback. The difference is that I am more interested in pvp, generally solo.I was working around some template ideas formed around a rifleman. We all know about rifles/melee and rifle/CM.I was planning on rifle/doc. But I want to use as little of doc as I need to be self sufficient(cure/buff). Anyway, I was thinking of 4440 or 4340 in doc.Playing with the extra points, I came across CM. I can do 3000 or 4000 depending on how much doc I take. I know it won't make me uber with the poisons. The idea was to use the poisons more as a distraction, maybe if I was double teamed. What I wonder is, is this pointless since rifles is pretty darn powerful as it is?

You NEED CM use at tier 4 if you want to use poisons. No way around it, sorry. I've been fidding with the character builder and I think I have found a template that you may like:
Master Pistoleer
Doctor 4/0/3/0 (for curedisease + poison) OR Doctor 0/3/4/0 (decent buffs) OR Doctor 0/4/3/0 (Rez, weaker buffs due to med use)
CM 4/0/0/4
Master Medic
Marksmen 0/4/0/4
(1 skill point remaining)
For the time being you can buy Haliva that is over 100% (anything less is bugged and won't work ) to increase your throw speed. That may change in the future though.
This would be a decent template for fighting high end mobs. I suggest you try it to see if it works the way you want. After grinding 27 professions this shouldn't be that hard to obtain
