I see 'debuff' used a lot in here - excuse my ignorance - what does it mean exactly?

Anything that is helpfull, like more speed, more health, higher regen is a buff, anything that lowers one of your stats is a debuff.

Opposite of buffs. Debuffs are slow(thryoidrupture), movement slow(electdrain). Specials that include rooting, snaring and regen killers. Some peeps consider Dots as debuffs.
