Thread: Debating how far to take Combat Medic
I've been really split about how to spec my character. I was oringinally going to go Doctor/Creature Handler/Pistoleer, but decided (while I still had loose points kicking around) to dabble in combat medicine.I've been noticingthat while I only have low levels of combat medicine so far, and my range is short, being able to use ranged stims to heal my pet and group mates is proving to be invaluable;it really cuts down on the frusteration of healing in combat. The problem is I can't hold on to all 4 professions and be useful.
I am split between two specs;
- if I were to be a doctor, I would have it mastered.
- if I were to be a combat medic, I would have Master Ranged Healing, Master Combat Medicine Crafting, and Master Combat Medic Support (0 points in Ranged Healing Speed).
In your experiences, which of these two templates would prove to be more useful, from a purely PvE standpoint. I see the power of ranged stims for healing, but how effective is poison in PvE? Is it worth missing out on buffs?

no.
You really dont see a huge range increase in your stims until you are a master CM.
that being said your stims should be effective from 20-30 meters at the level of your template.
poisons are decent in PvE, but not worth giving up the buffs.
if you arent gonna master CM...dabbling in CM really gives you little advantage...
CM is different from doctor...CM is a whole new set of skills and crafting...in comparison, 2 of 4 doctor trees are based on medic
and the returns dont come util very high levels and master levels
I'll chime in here, as I have similar questions. I made a decision to make a hybrid character that included two CM branches a few weeks ago. I'm pretty much there, (master CM support and expert range), but have never actually used my skills since I haven't bothered looking for people to buy things from.
I'm starting to get the impression that I'm not going to be very useful as a CM unless I'm master, but I'm unsure of the details. At master CM support, I'll have 75 CMU points. Not enough for AOE C's, I know.. but I'm not exactly sure what I can use. Single C's (ranged stim d?)and AOE b's? That's the impression I'm getting. But, I don't even know what that means. I'm not sure what the damage (or healing) of these various packs are. Information on these details are spread out and hard to come by... especially since things changed recently with the patch. I'd like to have the CM abilities, but not at the cost of master.
So, I guess what I'm saying is.. could someone fill in those little details? Answer definitively what I can use, and what the effectiveness of those items are. I'd be very appreciative.
Thanks.
With 75 CM use, you can use ranged Ds, area Cs, single target poison/disease Cs, and area poison/disease Bs.
The biggest downside to not getting CM speed is that it may take longerfor your medical timer to reset when youuse a ranged stim on someone, than running at them and using a regular stim.
Other than that, ranged Ds, AoE Cs, and mind poison Cs are all great. Single target poison Cs have their uses. I made some area poison Bs earlier though. They totally sucked, even with 10 experimentation points into them.
I'm halfway through the tree now, and I've just finally become not completely useless. Up until Ranged Cs made with advanced components, and AOE heals, I just bitched about the class a lot, and used Stim Ds to heal in combat because everything else I had was either useless, or too difficult for me to be able to use.
I wonder what you're investing the points in instead of your speed and consequently Master skills?
If you want a good healing class in combo with your other skills, and were going to Master Doctor, why not Master CM?
If you're only going to go partway in CM, you're not going to be happy. It's a very skill-point-intensive class, and you don't get rewarded for it until very high levels.
You just might wanna do Doctor instead; I plan on going Master CM, but I also picked up the Wound Treatment line in Doc, just to get revive. I figure someone else can always buff us before we take off to go hunt, but *I'm* the one that's a lot more effective in the field.
Well.. I got one thumb up and one thumb down.
It seems I can get ranged D (which I probably wouldn't use all that much due to my low healing speed), AOE heal C and single mind poison C. I wouldn't mind AOE poison C, but, again, not at the cost of master CM.
Kamileon, the only thing I'm really missing is healing speed and crafting (the second of which doesn't affect my effectiveness). I'm not just going to go part way up the trees. I'm never even going to mess with anything less than what I've mentioned above, since I'm already master CM support. (although I will play with the AOE poison/disease just to get a feel for how ineffective they are at my level).
And as far as what I'm in other than this, I won't be mastering any professions except for medic(of course). I have master wound treatment, pistol spec and enough taming to have one decent pet (not uber pet, just very decent). It's an experiment at a hybrid character.
For the curious, final template:
Pistol Spec
CM Support 4
CM Range 4
Wound Treatment 4
Taming 3
Training 4
Variations were dropping taming and getting pistoleer skills and either expert med. knowledge or expert CM speed, but I already have the CH stuff from my previous template, so I'll try this first. Medical XP is so easy to get with pets and a crate of stims, that it's not really a concern to play with the medical professions. (And I've decided never to craft again if necessary.)
Am I destined to be gimped? Perhaps... but my other character is a commando. I KNOW GIMPED. Like I said, it's an experiment. I like variety and want to test the bounds of it.
Either way, I appreciate the comments so far. They've been very helpful in helping me decide where to head.
If it makes a difference, I am a Master Surgeon (for revive) and a Master Combat Medic. I was originally going Master Doctor, but didn't like the way I had to heal in combat (i.e. Ctrl+3, /follow, /healdamage) - it was really irritating. I like CM alot better than doctor if you want to heal. I may also go Master Chemist in doctor so I can make better components... not sure...
Anyway, if you enjoy healing friends and keeping them alive, I would definatly suggest CM over Doctor. If you want to be the one who buffs the group before taking on a kimo or the counter-agent to PvP CMs (cure disease & cure poison) go doctor. Personally I am happy using Enhance A kits (Novice Doc can use) as I can enhance up to 500 with a good kit.
I think Docs would have a bigger role, were this game to have some sort of "boss" mobs... but as it is there are no named mobs or anything of the like requiring buffing before going in to fight... unless it were possible to kill Vader... hmmm
Just my 2 credits...
