Well as a CM I understand the need for the change but it just goes to show that the fundamental design for this profession was flawed at launch.
IMO a CM should have been a true field medic. They should have had the ability to range and area both heals & cures. They also should have been given some advanced weapon skills to provide them with some "Combat" to go with their Combat Medic title.
In addition they should not have had acess to the ability to apply diseases and poisons. This ability should have been given to either a completely different profession or perhaps to Commandos.
Instead we got a profession that cannot heal as well as Doctors. Cannot Buff. Have no real combat skills in PvE. The area and ranged heals are really not needed if you have a group that all has doctor buffs and high end armor. Outside of the advantage they have in terms of PvP why would someone want to play a CM? As a master CM I keep asking myself this all the time now.
Ah well. Maybe I'll drop Cm now and become a Doc.
Strongly disagree on afew points :
a) CM are the ONLY class with AREA HEALS. The power of a area stim , 1000 healing, to all players in a 30m radius cannot be under-rated. If mind wasn't the dominating factor in PvP, CM would be far far more powerful on the battlefield healing wise then a doc
b) CM is the only class that can heal mind damage. And with mind buffs, they can do this an unlimited number of times since the wounds only goes so far.
c) CM are not designed for front line - but a medic and doctor needs to get within a few meters to heal their patient. They are not ideal healers in combat. 'Combat Medic' does exactly what you'd expect- ranged heals. Somewhere along the line, folks got a bit too tied into their poisons and diseases as being 'ultimate weapons'. Thats not the CM role.
And FYI- I played as one of the earlest CM's on my server, and still have an account as CM Doc. It's *always* been a useful class. Non-mind damaging classes will return, as they used to, and combat medics were a great help in squad warfare. The mind damage will, and has to, go as the dominant damage type from the game.
Even with the current fixes, if the opponent is not a doctor, or does not have doctor support, a CM will still defeat them with a poison/disease application and run.
In all honesty, I'd like to see Bio Engineers pick up the poison and disease abilities that CM have - they can't do much with their skill point investment either. A Bio Engineer is the most logical choice for someone messing around with viruses and diseases if you really think about it. Then I can see argument that CM should have ranged cures and heals, docs get the buffs, wound heals , rez and short range heals. However, no class should have poison AND cure poison ability.

In what battles are Docs used for anything but healing poison/disease?

The requirement for dispersal mechanisms in CM meds is replacable by Rancor Bile. God knows if this will be true for AE cure packs as well. I have asked the correspondent to check. If this is the case then Docs won't need CMs at all. They won't be able to make factory runs of packs with the bile but who cares as long as an AE cure pack has 200 some odd charges on the pack and it's spammed with almost no delay? The CM profession is in its darkest hour.

Just ignore him. He hasn't posted anything good in the past 6 months other than inciting flame wars. He'll be complaining on the melee boards when they find out nothing much in the PvP world has changedsince defense stacking melee clones still own PvP inthis supposedlyfuturistic setting. They need to implement an AWP rifle into this game just to counter melee's.
So far all of the positive points of Combat Medic that the others have posted about are 1) limited to a few places in the entire game 2) self-destructive 3) are "would" and "should be" statements that "may" come into effect when armor and buffs are nerfed.
