Yes, tips are nice to have - not incredibly necessary, but nice to have at this point. I think Goohe's example is one where tips are critical, because he's the lead Medic in the area, meaning HE has to go pay the credits to get the training from the NPC. I've had to take part in that the last two days being one of the lead Medics in Mos Eisley (Chilastra), and most medics are willing to pay me a few hundred here and there for training, since I had to front so much of the costs. Eventually I'm sure training will be free across the board from player-player, but if I can't get tips from players, I extract them from the medics I train.

Also what's helped a lot is that I ask my patients if they have bone/hide. I don't take them as tips, I PAY my patients for those resources. Then develop bone armor and sell that off. The ROI is like 500%, and I get Artisan XP so that's far better than a straight credit tip any day of the week.

Same here, I woundn't ever charge, half the time I turn down tips/tip back/decline trades. Being able to heal 150 wound semi consistantly really makes wound healing trivial although great exp.

I just ask everyone else I'm healing, "You mind if I touch up this guy, he's very lightly wounded" if I'm working on someone with no color bars. Usually they don't mind, or I sneak in a heal every now and then to the new kid...

Just me though.

I never charge for healing and never will. Getting 10-20k in credits a night is just too easy doing delivery missions so don't say medics don't have any other way of getting money. I trained in artisan and I get my own resources so I don't need to go buy them for some outrageous amount. If I sit in a med center I make so much money off of tips for HELPING others that I dont even need to ask others. I have had people tip me 500-600 credits just for a few wounds.

Enjoy the game and don't be so greedy that you refuse to help others if they don't pay your demands.

I see 2 very different issues in the original post, rudeness and money (they seem to crop up together a lot)

The guy demanding wound treatment was out of line and i wouldn't have healed him either but i also wouldn't go out of my way to try to make a fool of him. Instead of giving him the facts of healing and then putting him on /ignore for a while when he reacted like a turd you made an enemy, your choice, but that can come back and bite you sometimes.

As far as charging for heals i never have and never will but i do accept tips and i have been tipped up to 700 credits for healing 30% wound dmg on health and action. Tips are plentiful in our med center and turkeys like the guy you ran into are non existant so far and i hope they stay that way

I think any serious medic should have basic artisan or they are doing themselves a disservice. Gathering resources can be done anytime (even in camp between fights) and it feels much better to be self sufficient than to charge for heals or run missions to buy resources.

To sum up my feeling i think if there is a long line that first come first served is good enough and if someone is desperate enough to pay to jump ahead that is ok but charging out right is not a good idea and abuseing some kid that blows up at you brings you down to his level.

I don't demand payment, but thinking that I shouldn't get paid once in a while is silly.

But yeah, while I do feel "that guy had it coming", I also don't think it's a very good way for a medical staff to behave.

MrSloth is absolutely correct and all of the other medics that feel that they should be paid for rendering medical treatment. Medical supplies are very expensive to make. Run a couple of harvesters and generators, and guess what else is pretty much mandatory down the road. A factory. And if you haven't any experience with these wonderful time saving devices, they cost money to maintain, the higher end ones, a nice chunk of credits per day. Add into that, the amount of resources it takes to make a highend woundpack/stimpack which are over the hundreds, and the 25 credit tips are not going to cut it, unless of course you want to use A packs for your entire career.

Now onto another issue. Those that are going to stick to the Medical profession, need to stand together and let the community know now that we expect to be paid for our services. If we wait until down the road, it will be very hard to implement, as everyone will have become used to the idea that they should be healed for free of charge.

Also, I do not wan't to sound ungrateful. But the people that want to give me hides/bones/meats, well honestly, they are of no use to me anymore. Mainly because I craft higher end packs and they are sub par ingredients, that will bring my finished product down in its usefullness. Although, these products may be usefull to a novice medic.

The real slap in the face is that alot of players will tip an entertainer for dancing (which is cheap for them...buy one dance every once in awhile or a new song and you got for your career...Entertainers deserve payment for their services as well as they provide a service to the community also) but not a medic, that uses pretty much ammo in their packs.

Medics that are demanding monetary means of payment are not greedy. Just think of them as a kind of artisan class.

Artisan - Spends hours surveying and sampling resources. Experimenting on their products to make them the best possible and then selling them to the community. They provide a valuable part to the community by keeping us supplied with all the gear that we want and can dream of. They charge for their wares and services, players pay without a second thought.

Entertainers - Spend hours dancing in cantinas, healing players of mind wounds and battle fatigue. Provide a valuable service to the community.

Medical Professions - Spend hours surveying and gathering numerous different types of resources. Experimenting endlessly on thier products to make the best possible. Spending hours a day manufacturing these products with their tools. Provide an extremely valuable service to the community by making it so that even the most wounded players can be on their way from the hospital in minutes. The community for the most part feel that they are owed healing services.

Medics should not have to run 6 hours of delivery missions a day to just make ends meet, every other class makes a profit for what they do. Many have chosen medic as a class, while the few and proud have chosen the medic as a profession, and for that choice should be paid well. Remember, this is not EQ clerics that have to buy a spell one time and use it forever with an unlimited amount of regenerating mana, but a healer that has limited quantities of the stuff that keeps you alive or makes you better.

I wish that the medics from beta would get in here (Mr.Sloth you're already here) and get it organized like they did in beta, making a union of sorts.

Goohe! How ya been man? Long time since I saw you in the med center in Theed during beta. After being a customer of a long time of Goohes during beta, I can tell you from experience that he was my preferred doctor. And if you really get him to go off, then you deserved it.

Now, some of you doctors need to quit with the I don't need to be paid, the experience is enough. To that I say BAH! Everyone else makes money off their profession, so why not the medical professionals? Marksman get paid fat loot and money while they gain xp for killing stuff, same with brawlers and scouts. Artisans get crafting xp for building stuff, and yet they get paid. And entertainers get xp for dancing/singing and they get paid.

Here's a scenario. Walk up to a weaponsmith in your town, say "Give me a gun now". He says "2000 credits". "But you get xp from making it" you say "So give it to me for free, and make sure you experiment it fully". "Go fiddle yourself" is his reply.

Mapl3... OMG... You're horrible!

So you stooped to his idiocy and made fun of him. Bah. Hate to tell you, but you're the kind of person that gives medics a bad name. You could have just let him go and told "your" medics to leave him alone: not heal him. Taking pleasure in someone else's, shall we say, childishness, is only just as childish. It would have sufficed to simply deny service.

Personally, I find other ways to make money that don't involve extortion. While I do appreciate tips--and they are tips--I don't go around demanding charges for services that I gladly offer for free. Most times, I hang around the hospital and heal anyone that needs healing. All the medics I know offer their services freely and don't charge. While it's polite to tip medics, the last thing I need is someone telling me I owe them for the charge. And I really hate those pricks that demand I tip--and I always tip when I have the money. I've gladly tipped medics myself when I needed healing before my medicine training. Now I just heal myself, but I am always willing to help others in need because I know how it feels to be broke and not have money for healing.

I have to agree with a lot of the other posters here and think you handled the situation badly myself. Making fun of the guy just created a enemy, and quite possibly a bad name for yourself. Just because he was a immature a$$ was no reason for you to be one also. Personally I would have just told him that he would get healed when it was his turn then went back to what I was doing. His turn may have been way down the road like when he was the only oneleft with any woundsbut that is beside the point.

On the subject of charging in advance I never do although I loudly thank all those that give me tips and let them know I appreciate it. In about 2 hours last evening I made 4k in tips without asking for any at all. Also got 100 units of chem from a guy and 250 units of good organic from another as tips.

The key here is thanking them publicly no matter if it is a 10 credit tip or a 1k tip. I have one brawler who comes in on a regular basis and he is always next on my heal list because he always tips and tips well. If any of the other patients say anything about me jumping him to the head of my line, I just tell them (publicly of course, and in a nice way) thathe is a equal and a generous tipper and when they start tipping me as often and as well as he does I will give them preferential treatment also. That seems to do wonders for the tips for those in the med center for a while at least, not just for myself but for the other medics also.

Bottom line is you screwed up in my opinion, like one person pointed out, this is a good reason for SCS. You will get a reputation at your med center unless you plan on traveling from town to town. Right now you might think you are the big dog on the block but soon other medics will catch up to you. Be careful of what you sow because that is what you are going to reap. I would rather have people seeking me out rather than extorting them for a few credits that I could make on a fed ex run in half an hours time. Course you play as you want to and I will play my way, we will se who comes out ahead in the end.

Wow Map,

I wish I played on your server and was there when the guy came in and you first refused to heal him w/o a "set price". I would have happily told the person "Ignore that healer, not all of us are $$ grubbing Wh**es and I will be happy to heal you as soon as I finish with this patient (if I was with one) any tips are always nice but not required, because I became a medic/doctor to help my fellow players". Then I would happily get all the XP from his major wounds while others waited in line for me to heal them and avoided your price gouging.

The first part of your post shows the kind of person you play in game /quote/,it's late evening and the med center is packed of course. I'm sittin there happy as a clam just healing away and chargin an arm and a leg for prefered treatment. (about 1200 for full heal)./quote/ That you freely admit that you enjoy "Gouging" (making people pay an arm and a leg to get healed) shows you are part of the PROBLEM not part of the solution to get us medics/doctors to not be taken for granted and stop being looked at as $$ grubbing wh**res.

Now yes I get annoyed with people "Demanding" to be healed. However usually a simple "I am with someone else right now and when I am done I will be right with you " or " We (all the docs/medics in the hospital at the time) have alot of patients waiting , if you will please have a seat we will tend to yorur wounds in a timely matter" will go along way to keeping people happy and make sure they tip since they feel that we ackowledge them and will help them in a timely matter.

You handled yourself VERY poorly from beginning to end in that situation and you made yourself and other medics/doctors look bad. I hope you enjoyed yourself (and felt like a real big man) for the 10 minutes or so that you "inflammed" the situation, because as I said you did alot more harm than good to the way people look at medics/doctors now.

I've never charged for my heals. And I will safely say I never will. I create my own stimpacks/woundpacks... and i agree that the higher end packs take LOTS of resources AND time to make...

But hell get some harvestors running... dont be lazy asses about it. Went to Endor with a huge group. I supplied the heals... in exchange... I got the organics so i could KEEP them healed. Not only did I get insance medic experience from it. I came out with MORE organics and stim packs then i went in with.

More experience there then I ever got in a med center. And don't complain about being only able to do delivery missions. You can also do destory. Just do the non faction ones. They are easy as hell and you can get 2k credits per mission. Two missions will take all of 10mins.

Sorry but Medics like me will be your thorn in your butt as I'll never charge for healing services. I always get tips. I'll take almost anything as a Tip. If you have Meat I'll take some of that. If you only have 20 credits then that's ok. I've even been lucky enough to get 2000 credits for a tip. Sweet!

But Here's something to think about. I wonder if the issue of payment comes from our real life social environment. I'm Canadian and we have for the most part free healthcare. So I don't pay for my trip to the doctors. In Star Wars Galaxies I don't expect payments as it's been burned in me that patients very rarely pay anything. Other nations that have to pay doctors will find this weird even utterly stupid as it's burned into them that they have to pay doctors. So if I play a doctor and I'm from one of these nations I'd expect to get paid by the patients.

As for the argument about needing money to buy/craft items this is not an issue. I make C lvl item and have never paid for any resources ever. And I even make enough money from Tips and Missions to have 2 harvesters up making me resources that I use and sell to other craters. To be honest I'm rolling in cash and as so spend it left and right on stupid things. Yes when I first started to do this it was slow but I enjoyed the challenge. Once I figured out the basics it was soooo easy.

So to conclude. I can guess that there will always be a battle between Docs that want money and others that don't care. Docs that request money will have to put up with some player flames. Cost for medpacks and stuff don't matter as there are ways to get it free.
