I think pistols for the lack of melee defense penalties, but I'm going to play with carbines also. What is important is that your combat skills should be oriented to PvE and last dictch PvP defense; you don't have the SP to be a serious combat damage dealer, except in your role as griefing poisoner and disease vector of your adversaries.
