Thread: Buying resources a viable method?
I've started a new character 4 days ago and planning on either making her a doctor or a combat medic. I certainly prefer the second, as I want to be useful in combat fields and poisons seem fun.
Keeping in mind the maintenance costs, I found that buying resources is less of a hassle than having my own harvesters, which has been working fine so far, but I'm still at medic's Org. Chem 3.
My question is whether I could continue buying resources and not running my own extractors when I become a combat medic, or are the resources needed so specific that I will be forced to get extractors sooner or later?
at 5c/unit on the bazaar
vs
700 credits + 900 power/~2000units out of 1 harvester/day
it is questionable that buying is the better option
running 4 harvester:
1 organic, 1 inorganic, 1 wind and 1 marketable resource costs about 3500 per day and you can get about 8000 a day from selling the resources of the 4th.
to expand that on 10 lots:
1 house - 2lots
1 factory - 1lot
2 wind - 2 lots
5 harvester - 5 lots
yields you at least 10k resources per day vs ~8000 maintainance per day.
at 5cr/unit on ore, steel or iron you only need to set up 1 harvester for bazaar selling and can maintain all other installations without having to run missions.
I didn't say it's cheaper, I said it's less of a hassle
I don't wanna surveying and trying to find locations.
Anyway, back to my original question, will I be able to find and buy the resources a combat medic needs?
unless you buy the surplus of another combat medic, it is questionable that you will find the specific resources for the advanced components.
basic stuff will be obtainable through the bazaar though.
if you have a merchant that is actualy interested to fill the needs of the cm market, you might have some luck there but i have yet to seea merchant on gorath that is not to busy restocking his vendors with weapons or armor and reverse auctioning (i.e. putting requests on the market instead of items) is something "that would be realy nice to have" (quote from Holo in beta) i.e. it's a dream.
the problem is, that we are not the ones to get the big money from and that is what the merchant class is aimed at. merchant exp comes from just letting a vendor sit there for a few weeks ,)
I have dropped artisan and have no real problems getting items for advanced components, provided they exist on the server. For some of the rare items I am paying 6-8 credits per unit. The worst I am seen is having to pay 12 credits per unit for advanced component water vapor.
Also I took scout for the harvesting, faster movement and camps so meats and organicsare not a problem.
I do keep some lower end harvest machines on me, and if I am out in the wilderness and see a bunch of them in a clump I will drop one of mine thier since I figure if they are out this far from town it must be good stuff. You can buy the low end machines for in the 1K under range throw some credits and power so that they operate a few days and they pay for themselves if you can use the items, if not sell them on the bazaar and recoup your cost.
Keep an eye on resources, when a shift comes, do a bunch of sampling to find one or 2 of the *best* OQ/PE resources that you will need.
Drop 3 or 4 harvesters down on that resource, and over the course of a week or two, you can get 30-50K of that resource. Once that's done, you won't need any more of it for a long long long time.
I'd love to buy on the bazzar too. It would be SO much easier. Unfortunately, I'm a pure medic, and tips just don't pay the bills.
Plus, I think 5c per resource is highway robbery, and is a result of the inflated money-supply caused by all the baz-nitch exploiting done since release. (hopefully, those prices will decline in the future)
I personally like to run the harvestors.
Its fun, and since I am a casual player, it easy to log on and do a harvestor run and then log off. I find that I actually have to spend more time finding someone selling what I want to craft.
I just bought a factory, and am looking forward to crafting crates of supplies. That way I should be able to get well ahead of my med needs. I make most of my money from selling valuable ore and metal, but I am on Naboo-Ahazi and the resources there just dried up, so I am going to be broke for a while.

whichever option you decide on, i sell tons of the advanced resources on my vendor south of coronet on Chilastra!
You have yourself a brand new customer!!! I will be at your shop this evening!!!!
So,harvester's are workable if you only play an hour or two a night?
To save your game time and skill points: buying resources is better option (what harvester running people won't tell you - is how much time they spend to find resources, and that you will need at least 4 harvesters just to make poisons, and if you want advanced components - you will need 6 harvesters just for healing subcomponents).
There are many medics who do just fine without harvesting/artitian skills, all you need is communication skills (to find suppliers for all your resources so you don't need to repeat search every time).
