Apartments ARE possible!
The coding is already there! They used it to make it possible to put up to 75
items in Luxury Yachts, and xx items in Merchant tents! Heck, I've seen
Merchant Tents with NO vendors, and the sign outside says "So-and-so's
Home" - inside it's roughly decorated as a house, with a couch, couple
chairs, bookcase, armoir, pictures, etc.... if this can be done, then
apartments are possible!
Wouldn't it be great to be able to just crash and logout in town, instead of a
800-1500 meter drive out to your house? For those of us who don't want to
live in a player city because of the taxes, weekly elections, etc., give us a
place to crash without the long drive home! It's a bummer to be through
playing for the day, tired, finally ready to log out and then get aggroed a
couple times by those dumbazz thugs or shaupauts or whatever else on the
way home.
So make the apartment a little pricey, say double the rate of a house, and
only have 50 items in it, just a few pieces of furniture and a
bookcase/armoir/chest with a few "extras" like meds, powerups or whatever
you might want to store there. An apartment is a convenience, a luxury;
price them as such. AND, make it available to players only after a minimum
amount of time, whether as a 6-month or one year bonus.
Then... how about giving up the deed for your Luxury Yacht, or at least
making it cost one lot for those who didn't get, and don't plan to get, JTL?
For those who do have the Luxury Yacht, be honest here for a minute...
Think fast! What do you even have in your yacht? Do you remember? :->
And how often do you use it now? Do you "launch" instead of "travel" so
you can walk around in it for 10-15 minutes, roleplay having a drink at the
bar, etc., or do you just select "travel" and zoom off to your next
destination? So would it even hurt to trade it for an apartment in town?
Don't think so. Plus, destroying it doesn't "destroy" it... you can always just
regenerate it later if you change your mind.
[Side note to SOE: How about giving the choice of a Luxury Yacht or an
Apartment in town for the purchase of JTL? Think $$$ here, SOE. lol]
To expand the idea, how about different sizes of apartments? Like an
"efficiency" apartment with 50-item storage, and one room, costs you one
lot and 35 credits/hour, then move up to a Condo, 100-item storage, two
rooms, costs you two lots and 75 credits/hour, then to the top floor for a
Penthouse suite, 3 rooms, 200-item storage, costs you 125/hour and 3 lots?
If a player can't get an apartment until they've played either 6 months or one
year, then most wouldn't have any trouble with these prices, for the
convenience and luxury of an apartment in town.

Yea I like this idea, this will however take a big hit to player city's...but this will also make the city's that do stay behind more dedicated, in other words, there won't be small player city's left, and the ones that have grown to metropolis will do alot more to make their city more inviting. A better politician war.

I do not care for your idea. Why would I trade in either my Yacht or the lots where I could place a house for a dinkyappartment that can hold FEWER items? And making the Yacht cost a lot is a penalty that they removed. Look at the numbers:
- Yachtcan hold 75 items& cost = 0 lots
- Merchant Tent/Small Naboo Round House can hold 100 items& cost = 1 lot
- Other Small Houses & All Medium Houses can hold 200 items& cost = 2 lots
- Player Medical Center/Theater can hold 300 items& cost = 3 lots
- Player Cantina/Large House/Guild Hall can hold 400 items& cost = 5 lots
Sorry, but an appartment that can hold fewer items per lot costjust is not worth the savings in travel time etc... and the only reason I am able to have a Yacht is because it does cost 0 lots as I had used up all of my lots before I ever got JtL... and while I will not store anything on it, I am in the process of decorating it so it looks nice and I can show it off to my friends who also have JtL... and yes, I have and do use the launch option instead of just travel unless I am in a hurry because the experience is awesome.
P.S. If I feel too tired to make the journey home after a hard day's play, I just stay in a Hotel in town. Also, you are not required to place a house, a Merchant Tentor a Guild Hall in a Player Town... so if you don't want to pay taxes/deal with elections etc, you can avoid that now.

This is a great idea! Very well written.
To be honest, I never use my yacht exept for some RP events, and besides I can just get another ship when I want to use the "travel".
Having an apartment should not be so much about storage, but about "feel" of the game.
Ive always wanted appartments, so heres my /sign

Actually, i like this idea too. I can imagine it being a problem with the coding & support of the cities though. Someone mentioned they didn't like the idea because it is a poor way to spend the money- a house costs half as much and holds more... then again, I kind of see Real life working the same way- if i tabluated all the money i've spent renting apartments compared to what i could've spent on house payments- i've probably spent more in rent. The idea of renting an apartment is great.
It makes total sense to charge more to live in Theed than it would to have a small home in a suburb or player city far away, If you live in Manhattan you're gonna be paying an arm and a leg more than if you live an hour outside the city or if you live in jersey. I live in Los Angeles- If you live in Beverly Hills, where a lot of the entertainment industry stuff happens- or on the Beach in Santa Monica- you'll pay more than if you live in the valley. Simple. If you don't want to get an apartment and are happy with having your home wherever, fine- not everyone has to have the same opinion.
I think the apartment idea could add a fun dimension to RP as well- who wouldn't wanna throw a party in a high-rise apartment in Coronet overlooking the spaceport? It's a fun option to have.
What about allowing architects to build "apartment buildings." They create a building in a player city with a certain number of units inside it. Those units could have a limit- then again, they might not! What if the businessman only has enouch creds to start a 6 medium unit apartment building in a small player city outside of Tyrena? Then, next door, a big businessman contracts a 20 luxury unit apartment building... it'd be kinda neat to see a size difference as well as a price bidding war.
Who knows.

I don't think it would work, what about rent and eviction, it would be too non-starwarish

I like this idea. It would be very cool to live in the heart of Mos Espa or Entha. I'd also like to see players able to get a hotel room for the night... put those hotels to use

I love this idea as well and think it could add an interesting aspect, the real estate market. Please make it so.
