Thread: How do you get citizens for your town?

I would be very interested to hear how others get citizens for their towns - especially when they are not part of a big guild or an already big town...

We are trying to get new citizens for our relatively young town but I have to admit it is sometimes like pulling teeth - and just this weekend we had one of our new citizens take their house (which he got from us, including maintenance forquite some time)down and leg it out of town... While I knew this would happen sooner or later it still peeved me off that they didn't even have the balls to let us know...

I would really appreciate some feedback on the advertising you use and what you do to keep your citizens happy - or maybe also how to prevent things like with this guy that just waited to get a house deed with some maintenance on it...

Well our city started with the start of a new guild. Everyone who is a citizen of our city is in our guild. So we pretty much have recruited for the guild, and then comes the offer to live in our city. I know that a lot of cities keep their city and guild separate entities, but to us they go hand in hand. This has worked very well for us!

I personally have recruited for 6 city's. 2 on a previous server and 4 on my current server. All were built to lvl 4 status or higher. I have one method that I have used that works better than all methods combined. No one really pays attention to people who are recruiting by spamming, and I personally usually put them on ignore. If you are simply looking for citizens, the best way that I have found and have had the most success with, is sending out mails. I write up a mail about the city that I am recruiting for. In the mail I state what the benefits of living in the city are, what services we offer, and what kind of vendors we have, I also include a wp, and invite them to look around. I also add the requirements for living there such as faction etc. If there is a guild being hosted in the city I make sure to included that we are only recruiting for citzens and not guild members. I will sit in a starport and pass along these mails to people who are unguilded and/or look like they are new to the game. Every city that I have recruited for has offered a free house, a new vehicle, and some maintence and/or credits. By passing out the mail you are giving them something to read, aside from the passing spam that not many pay attention to. You are also giving them a waypoint to go take a look at. It gives them a chance to *think* about it. And everytime they open their mail, they are reminded about it, unless of course they deleted it due to non intrest. Coloring the subject line text also helps it to stand out and there will be less of a chance it will get accidently deleted when they are getting rid of vedor/purchase mails.

I currently have 2 city's that I am working on now. My city on Tatoonie is for the guild, we have a few non guild members living there but not many. This city was built specifically for guild use. Although we have a "paper mayor" in this city, I take care of placing structures, recruiting new citizens, and making sure the treasury is kept up etc. This city is close (by 7 citizens)to Metropolis status.

I am currently the mayor of a city on Corellia that fell, and we are currently rebuilding. This city is just a city, remians imperal/neutral but for the most part all are welcome. This city is intended more so to be a "merchant city" with an emphasis on commerce. I am currently 10 citizens from having a shuttle and should have it in this week.

This method has worked on every occassion from me. And I have had very few complaints on the quality of people I have in town. Good luck with yours, and I hope this will help you some.

Thank you for your replies...

I sent out invitations only to people with houses relatively near to our town - never thought of sending a mail to potential new citizens I see when I go about my business all over the place... That just was a positive "DUH!!!" moment...

well when i was a guild leader/mayor i used to get new players not because they were easy prey (believe me most wanted loads off of us so they didnt join) but because the guild liked helping, we wernt a ghost town either even when we only had 20 citizens

I have also went out in search of new players for the fact that they do need a hand up. By providing them with a new house vehicle and some credits they are extremely grateful. We always have people running around our city's , running missions, shopping, and just generally looking to be social. It builds a great community this way. Mos Eisly is a great place to recruit right now as all the new players have to start there and go through the tutorial. Be prepared though, as one of the first "veteran" players that they probably have contact with, they will look up to you have have questions about many aspects of the game. If you are someone that enjoy's helping others, such as myself, this is a great way to help. Sometimes I will go stand in Mos Eisly just to greet the new players, and answer questions for them. It can be alot of fun

Scornd - just wanted to thank you again for the tip with the mail - I tried it out yesterday with about 15 sent mails and not 30 minutes later there were already 5 people cruising around in our town and 2 of them decided to stay already...

That's awesome, glad to see you are having success. Using that method will get citizens in quicker than you think, and before long you will have a city of considerable size Keep up the good work, and good luck
