Thread: Roads between major cities

Why would socities who use starships, shuttlecraft and other hovercraft need roads to get between locations? Seems like an awful waste of resources.

Its always faster to go up into space then down to your destination than it is go overland to its location (shorter distance). Case in point, getting from Moscow, Russia to Valivadstok, Russia. Do you make a road spanning 6,000 miles through the harshest land on the planet or do you fly?

You answered your own question on why primitive dant has roads and the others dont. The roads themselves are a sign of primitive travel. We spacefarers have much more advanced travel then negates the use of roads.

ok so how about the abality to level out the land in your city so you can actualy build in the radius of your city instead of skipping areas cus of hills or small ponds? Something like sim-city that lets an archetict to do or possabile a hybrid politican/archetict.

If they ever put a Landscaper profession in the gamethey better bring back Miner and Rancher...

As far as the roads are concerned, yeah that would be cool, but I doubt we'd see it. It makes too much sense that the civilized and technically advanced cultures would have roads....

Swoops and the such are notably the mode of transpertation on planet for most folk, it's hover technology allows for hovering only a few meters above the ground. Thus if the ground goes up, down, in and out then so will your speeder. That is the reason why Roads are an excelent idea. Be it Naboo or Dantooine, roads would make travel easier and also give more area which would be ideal for shop placement. Right now we have most shops placed inside a Player City or in a huge circle around an NPC city. Addition of roads would develop avenues of traffic that would also be good for shop placement. Player cities would also want to be placed near these roads for cross planet travel.

/ my 2 cents

Now that wasn't something I had consided - but it is an absolutely terrific point! Easy access to player shops - and great advertising locations. Wonderful!

Ah, butall ground vehicles (and foot traffic) in this game are hindered by terrain - hence the need for roads. If these vehicles could truely "fly" OVERall obsticles like they should, THEN the need for roads wouldbe unnessecary as you point out!

Very good point! I wasn't sold on the whole idea but cities would defintely spring up around these travel ways and that would be very nice.

You got my vote.

Ummm, Note to you fellows: When they released player controled cities they lessoned restrictions on "flatness" needed to build within city limits. I've seen peoples front steps turn 3-4 times because they built on a hill, I just dont understand how this thread even got started and the first reply said it plainly..... Space Craft, I have yet to even see a wheel in this game what would anyone want a road for.

The civilization hasnt always been in the space-age. There must have been roads in some timeline, so where are they now? They must have been there, connecting cities on Corellia etc...

Hehe - well what else would you call a flat, narrow area, clear of terrain and obstructions, used for travel (both by vehicles and foot traffic), streching forlong distances?

Regardless of what travels over or on it (hovercraft, horses Cu Pa, or people) a road is a road. It provides ease of travel though rough terrain and over or through obsticles (by bridges or tunnels). Until everyone in SWG is equipped with a Jet Pack and the hover vehicles we have now can actualy fly over trees and boulders - roads would be a big help. They might even enfuse "dead" NPC cities with some life again by increasing the amount of people that visit or built shops around the roads that lead to them...

I think the ideas of roads would be a great asset to the game, if for nothing other then helping people find their way from one city to another. I mean at one point in time there must have been some sort of roads between major cities, heck a beaten up road would be fine doesnt have to look paved like the cities, but at least something that isnt overgrown by trees etc.
