Thread: Making a fortified city advice

On my server I saw a Rebel controlled city on Rori that formed 'walls' around the city by taking advantage of the way Naboo houses interlock together. They were able to form a 3 sided box basically with their city necessities inside the box. The entrance to the box was then guarded by a collection (7 all told) of faction bases with minefields and hoardes of Rebel NPCs.

the only way in the city was either by shuttle or through the defenses.

I am wonder just how much is involved in creating such a setup and if there is anyway to acheive a similar result using other types of houses (like Tatooine style)

I have expirimented with tat style houses but they can only go so close to each other and of course leave a gap (are there any types of facilities or items that can be placed in the gaps as to restrict player movement in a way similar to the interlocked Naboo houses?)

I would like to build what amounts to a small army fort (not really a full sized city), just a burg with a few basics dedicated to GCW combat.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I believe this is considered an exploit

Not an exploit, as it does not "lock" people out of areas of the game. It only makes it difficult. Thats like saying the devs are exploiting by creating the Correlian Corvette missions by not allow and Imperial to reach the bridge because of all of the SBD's and rebel Admirals.

I have seen a few cities done like this, and they are all beautiful. So far only seen it done with Naboo houses, never any other style or any of the city installations used in the outer wall. A word of advice though - I would recommend leaving the shuttleport outside, and a few of the installations you would like to make money with, ie. merchant tents. This way any person can access your money makers, but not the middle of your city or the bases very easily!

Medium Corellian/Generic do the same thing. One word of advice that I happened to realize, if you have one med home facing an opposite direction in the wall it creates an "alley" that is a lot smaller then 1 grid space. This wouldcreate a tighter bottleneck to defend as well as make the overhead map confusing over where to retreat to. (overhead map just shows 4 rows of med homes with no visible break) Be sure to use streetlamps and/or mission terminals to shore up the sides and you'll have an easily defended square. If you want to make it more open it is much more likely to be attacked since imperials would have a better chance. Drop the cloner inside to make camping more difficult but yeah, leave the shuttle outside so you can get a mercantile district set up as well.

It is only an exploit if there is absolutely no way to enter or exitthe areaand prevent someone from leaving(as in completely walled in and shored up with lamps) if it's just difficult then it is not an exploit. The Dev's meant to always have an alleyway between homes however they slipped up somewhere along the line and never felt it required much of a fix. Besides it makes streets so much more realistic and beautiful for player cities when they butt up next to each other. Now they just need to make the Corellian mediums more interesting looking....

Unless they're overlaping footprints on the houses it aint. Some people just dont like it becasue it creates a pothole in the little road of life.

one thing though. People and guilds have figured out that you can walk through the houses.meaning they can walk through your wall anywhere they like. Although looking cool to see people come out the the walls like ghosts. Thehouses now dont serve the purpose of the wall. Can still come through wherever they want if they know how. And alot of people do.

Tha galaxy is a warzone.

It is wise to provide defense for one's citizens in times of war, otherwise your citizens die or exodus, leaving the unwise....leader of none.

Walls are a superb example of city defense strategy, especially in the age befor aerial warfare and bombing raids, and as SWG does not have such dangers, walls would provide that security (or at least help) for citizens against rampaging bands of Imperial goons and/or Rebel terrorist squads.

Stacking houses together is an example of medieval-style defense where the inner side of a defensive perimeter wall was used as the backside of useful buildings (armory, stables, smithy etc).

There is no god-awful reason why that should be an exploit.

Let the walls stand proudly defending their citizens from the depredations of madmen with weapons.

Correct and when some on our server did that they got a csr there to ensure it wasnt an exploit. As long as there is a way in you are ok

I have not witnessed the 'ghost' effect mentioned. The place I mentioned on Rori, I tried and could not walk through the outer wall (they also had the houses 'private' so the enemy could not enter.

Good to know this works on Corellian houses as well (Ill have to check the list of what planets those are buildable on)

Are there any smaller things that can be stuck in the alley between Tat houses that would restrict movement? (like personal harvesters, small factories, etc?) Id really like to be able to channel movement in and out of the fortified city through just a handful of places, that can be guarded by bases & turrets (now that would give meaning to being a 'Stronghold')

Actually I wonder if turrets would fit in the gaps between the houses?
