Thread: Why do we have player cities, and proposal

I've always pondered this question ever since a few months after they were introduced. They are all over Correllia, Naboo, Dantooine, etc. but for what? I can understand the role-playing aspect of it, and I do think they are a good idea, but to me they are useless right now. And I know some people will argue that there home cities are different, but hear me out: The cantinas and theaters never have entertainers in them, the hospitals almost never have doctors in them, save for a macroing buffer, andI have never been forced out of an enemy faction town by "militia" Now the only advantage I can see for player cities is conveniently placed shuttleports and cloning centers. I guess the real question is, why start a city if you will rarely, if ever participate in it?

What is even more silly, is even before player cities were introduced, many of the existing cities were/are always deserted. I think this is such a waste of the developer's talents. They constructed Kaadra, Kor Vella, etc for a reason. People complain about city lag, and the easiest solution to it is for players to go somewhere else besides Coronet and Theed. There is nothing that Coronet and Theed provide that isn't provided by the other cities on the planet. What I propose is that large PAs (including entertainers, doctors, image designers, crafters) make an effort to populate certain cities. If things were more spread out, there would be less lag, smaller lines for buffs, and I think better overall atmosphere for the game if each city had a generous populous. What do you say?

Do people complain that New York City is crowded when Northshire Pennsylvania has a population of 20? Yes. It's the way people work man, we herd. We creates major hubs for buisness and life in general.

As for the player cities, firstly do you think these planets are really THAT barren of technology? Some of these planets should be covered with buildings. I don't know about your player city, but mine always has atleast 20 people in it. We converse, duel, and just have good fun. Yes we have an entertainer bot, so? There are not enough people there to get the entertainer xp for a live entertainer (again, reason for herding). Where would all the merchants be if it wern't for player cities? Crowded around coronet creating more lag.

Player cities/villages are not necessary per se as people can just setup shop near a starport of their choice. However, villages provides a base to build up a community - for instance, my guild is a small one with 6 active members or such, however we still pay upkeep to our town that was build back when we numbered 50+ members. Do we profit from this... not really. No crafters are willing to join a town without a shuttleport nowadays - but it gives us a sense of "belonging" to somewhere. I think this is the case for alot of people. I mean, why do we keep seeing outposts and townships pop up on Dantooine etc. , when their inhabitants just as well could have joined existing towns? Why do people in real life sometimes move away from the city where they are anonymous most of the time? I don't think there is a reasonable explanation for this, except it is part of human nature to seek out their own "territory" when a big enough group is gathered. Some kind of primordial desire left in the subconciousness.

all this human analysis is nice, but let us rent rooms in NPC cities and let merchants rent someplace to sell their wares. that would make people gather. and hopefully in different cities, not everyone in coronet...
about that talk about the player cities not being deserted.... they are! i dont think i've seen anyone in a player city for quite some time.
anyway if i could choose, i'd rather belong in mos eisley than in some made up player city. i play this game for the star wars in it, not the made up stuff....
