Tapestries are strange like that. You have to be standing back from the wall or the tapestry will drop into it.
If you cannot target it to get it out, send in a CSR ticket. They rescued mine.

I tried to hang a tapestry in my house, only to find that it disappeared as soon as I dropped it. 
The "find lost item" function is described in-game so as to make me think that I will have to "undecorate" all my furnishings, in order, until I find the tapestry. I don't really want to go through that - so before I tried, I figured I'd ask. Is that how it works? I'd rather eat the credits than experience the tedium of redecorating.

I went 1.5 years without buying a house, I finally do, and this is my reward. Thanks, SOE. I was better off sleeping in the street.

Yeah... I had the same thing happen. Even worse, it was on a city hall, which has no "find lost item" function, and I was trying to destroy the city hall in time to get on the election cycle of another city! Fortunately, CSR ChrisG responded quickly and pulled my tapestry out of the wall. As the previous paster said, make sure you are not near a wall when you drop these pesky tapestries.
