OK serious subject. I know its by design to keep resources limited, but does that mean I have to hate the game to go out and hunt rasps canaries for avian meat?

What about farms and ranches, structures that take up lots, require BE's to go out and sample the new spawn of beasts for meat, and then instead of spending the next two weeks hunting canaries and hating the game, you can use the architect-crafted ranch structure, the BE-sampled DNA, and start getting the meat producing into hoppers of the ranch. The ranches stop producing when the meat spawn dies, just like a harvester stops when a resource dies. Need more meat? Get a better quality ranch structure, and get more of them within your lot tolerances.

We were just talking about this.

Nah, it wouldn't replace the tried and true method of hunting, its just an alternative to hunting. The person needing the meat isn't going to turn away offers from hunters when its offered. But what it may do (will do, in fact) is bring down the monopoly of meat and hide that the hunters are commanding outrageous prices on, hundreds of CPU credits, and in turn, bring down the prices of the food, buffs, and armor that rely on these commodities. Speaking as a doc, the only reason I charge other doctors so much for the buffs I manufacture is because I'm paying 200 or more cpu for the meat, and they in turn then have to charge what they do for buffing the fighters and hunters. This would be a benefit to the whole economy to eliminate the monopoly and make the hunters compete with alternative channels.

You wouldn't pay 5cpu for radioactive if you have a harvester that can mine it for 1cpu. That's the kind of trap we're in now economically. Plus as said in the beginning, it would eliminate a hella bad lot of hunting canaries. Hunters could also pass on hunting canaries when they spawn, opting to only engage in hunts that persented more challenge and enjoyment, knowing that their regular meat and hide buyers had alternatives, "I won't be adding to your meat production on this one, sorry, I can't spend two weeks hunting canaries, I'm glad you've got the ranches to get some."

I agree with the prices for ranger products. I'm a Ranger and I can't believe some people pay as much as they do. But in reality, its not the Ranger's fault. There was a time when we charged 2-10 CPU. Then docs and AS's started offering outrageous amounts when the hologrind happened, and it stuck. Honestly, most Rangers charge what's offered. So blame the local docs and armorsmiths for the gouge. It sucks, but once again it falls on the vets who stockpiled millions of creds and are still doing it.
