Thread: Easy and Thought-Out Idea: Mailboxes/Courier System, the Galactic FedEx

One thing that I've noticed is very nice about having a vendor is that you can have people drop off things you want on it, like auctions or special orders from crafters. I dont see why this should be restricted to those who put the points in for Artisan XX3X, especially since full-combat templates can be some of the best customers for certain crafters. What I propose is that every house be given a small hopper, maybe 40 items, or maybe 100 if its not a database concern, that would work like a mailbox. This hopper would be pickup-only, like output hoppers on factories. At certain locations in the galaxy (starports, shuttleports, hotels, your mailbox, etc., up for debate) there would be post offices, that would allow you to send items for a fee to be delivered at themailbox of the declared residence of any player.

This wouldnt create a loophole for extra storage anymore than factories are, and it would help facilitate special orders, especially in cases like starting crafters that dont maintain a vendor, or for those like tailors thatmay get a lot more special orders iftheycould deliver the clothes when the player may not be online, and saves the trouble of a player heading out to the vendor to pick up the order if they're busy on quests or in a group (or just plain lazy as many may be). It also would help expediteforumauctions, where often I see people reposting items after the winning bidder couldnt get together with the auctioner tofinalize the sale. The codingis essentially there...bank tips are able to deliver items into escrow when players arent online, and adding an output hopper-esque container onto a house shouldnt be difficult. It would give some more meaning to declaring your residence, too.

If anyone sees any gaping holes or anything else to shoot this idea down please lemme know....and I currently have a vendor and I'm not planning on getting rid of it, so this isnt just a "i dont want to spend the SP on Artisan" idea either =)

Cool ideas, and lemme expand upon what ya jsut said.....

How about a vendor has a special option when placed by a merchant of a certain "rank" (how far they are in it) is an option for a newsletter. The newsletter would work by simply having an existing template that crafters would put info into (like name of crafter, what they produce, name of company, etc.), and players would simply select that vendor and select the option "newsletter." This would be maybe twice as costly as regular planetary map advertising, but one could provide newsletter customers of up-coming auctions, special deals for subscribers, etc. The players would pay maybe a ten credit fee for this, giving a minor cash sucker for the economy.

As for delivery, maybe it could work via a special bazaar term, or simply up-date the bazaar term to deliver the item within say ten minutes upon buying it. Good ideas, keep em coming!

True, but who would have THAT many people on their friends list? Besides, I merely expanded upon your mailbox idea, not hijack it, lol....

Theres a problem though, that would make even less people want to go to player cities.

Great idea, it would also make housing more useful than just storage and RP.

However, as the latest poster before me mentionned, this could make player cities less visited, because buyers wouldn't need anymore to go to a vendor to get their item. To avoid this, the mailbox/courier system could be available only in houses built in player cities ; this would add a reason for people to join a player city, this would add a reason for people to come to their city from time to time, and this would make sense (a galactic FedEx would be able to deliver items to people who live in a city, not to people who have a house in the wilderness).
