Is there any way possible to put a limit on how many people can AFK spam in say a 64-128m diamater around the starports? It is rather annoying to have to stand in one place after loading into Theed while waiting for all of the AFK spam to catch up with my system. I hope that there would be a way to set a cap on that.

that would be great. To prevent AFK spammers/people, I wish the server kicked anyone off who was AFK for more than a half hour..

Yeah, that would be great for the spam problem if the people were kicked off after macroing for half an hour or so without keyboard/mouse response.

Go into ctrl+O Options Screen in-game. I think it's under chat options. There's a little box in there somewhere that allows you to turn of AFK chat. It won't get rid of all of it (the people running macros without an AFK tag will still show), but it does help quite a bit.

Khristen you are my new best friend. Thank you very much for letting me know this. The biggest problem is the ones who don't let AFK come on. BUt yeah, this will help immensely.

Watch out for those crazy CSRs though.
LOL!!! I prefer to shoot CorSec and run towards the AFKers. CorSec, RSF and other planetary police tend to use AoE attacks quite often.

I arrived around 0300 GMT in /Theed a few morings ago, on Chimaera server.
I was so shocked NOT to see spam after spam, that i logged out and in again, in case I had a bug.
I hadnt but its the first time in yojnks that I have experinced a NPC starter city WITHOUT spam.......

When the vendor searching puplish comes out, it should reduce spam abusers.

/addignore <player name> works great also. Use that in conjunction with the auto ignore for the AFK spammers and you have a peaceful experience at starports

The problem with this is any single spacial action with an animation (such as /smile or /wave) will reset the AFK timer, thus preventing people from being set AFK at all. I turned this feature on the MINUTE it was added and have not noticed much of a difference at all on my server as all the spammers simply turned off AFK. I've had to resort to /addignore as the first order of business after zoning in, in order to have some sort of peace around starports and in cantinas.
A poster above said it best, the [auto-]AFK timer should be dependant on keyboard/mouse input, and to add to that: Auto-afk cannot be disabled. Legit macro users would not be effected as they would still have to move the mouse to click a resource in the midst of their crafting macro, or entertainers could dedicate their time to chatting with those in the cantina while performing their dances/songs. Not sure of the impact on AFK Combat Macros, though.. but the theory is sound.
This would also help CSRs track down those using 3rd party programs as it would become very apparent when the spammer is still AFK spamming in a starport hours after the CSR has started observing them.

Auto Afk can be turned off from the options menu and you don't need emotes to stay in game, just some sort of macro running that loops itself.
Edited for correctness
