I think it was at a recent fan-fest where there was a comment made that the devs had heard a request to have skyscraper structures available for player cities, and that they were quite excited about the idea.
So has there been any more news on that? (had a quick look but not found anything)
Also, with that in mind, I have this little suggestion/idea:
Allow them to have player-owned apartments.
So the fundamentals I envision are:
-
Only available on Core Worlds (don't want them to look too out of place) -
Externally similar to existing NPC city skyscrapers (for worlds where there are none, such as Tatooine, maybe underground variants) -
Can only be placed by a mayor in a player city -
Internally, only a publically available decorated 'lobby' with an elevator (lift) is shown. -
Each apartment will have a simple one level 2/3 room structure, similar to generic house maybe -
An apartment costs 1-2 lots, and rented (authorised) from the mayor of a player city -
Maintenence, and other functions such as public status in the apartment function exactly the same as normal structure. -
The structure itself costs no lots, or maintenance, but the mayor must have an apartment there (he has to be the concierge!
)
How I see it working is:
-
A keypad in the elevator will show a list of public apartment names, selecting one will go to that apartment -
If you're an owner, a default option allows you to go directly to your apartment -
Once you go to an apartment, you go to a separate virtual space, not affecting or affected by anything outside -
In each apartment there is a door (that cannot be opened) and a keypad that allows transport to the lobby -
Pretty much everything is the same as normal housing -
With many players sharing a single structure, to prevent griefing, it cannot be removed unless all other apartments have been removed first (by their respective players) -
Alternatively, an eviction notice period of 6 weeks could be enforced, after that time the apartment gets packed into the datapad -
Possibly implement it that the apartment is a separate deeded structure that can only be (virtually) deeded to a skyscraper (ie, as it's container) - this would allow people to move apartments simply by using the packup function (if they haveauthorisation to move to the target skyscraper from the mayor)
The advantages to this include:
-
Reduces the amount of individual player housing on planets, thereby reducing lag -
Increases the amount of wilderness space on core worlds -
Added flavour for player cities -
Allow's mayors to manage cities without resorting to urban sprawl -
It's really cool
One added point, it would also be cool, if this was implemented in NPC cities too! The skyscrapers already exist, but there may be a policy against this. Not sure who could give authorisation to this either.
So - any thoughts, responses, comments on this?
Good idea? or pipe dream?

one problem i see with this is if the person has a vendor in there apartment how many people are going to search multiple floors to find the vendor pluss it would probly be hard for them to make it so diferant parts of a building act as seperate buildings.

Two posibilities immediately come to mind. Well, three.... ok... AMONGST the possibilities are such things as:
- Note vendors in the public apartment list
- Do nothing, if they have to search, they have to
- Don't allow vendors in an apartment - use a traditional house/mall
hmmm, thinking that 3 would be my preferred option /shrug

Well, if they reduce the number of individual buildings that get loaded when travelling through an area near a player city, that'll reduce lag for one....

Btw what's the benefit of high rise buildings?
Besides, there was a post about them being discussed in a fan-fest

I thought the proposed concept was to introduce skyscrapers that were only for aethetic purposes (i.e. could not be entered; purely decorative) that mayors could drop similar to gardens.
