Thread: Interior Decorating for Dummies
I mean, most profession forums have a "read this first" or whatnot stickied, but we don't. Let's change that.
Hopefully, we can get this stickied.
I'd like to start this off with a tip I wish I had known when I first started decorating.
If you move items while sitting in a chair, the item will move perfectly straight, not slanted at all. COROLLARY: if you rotate the chair X degrees, the object will move diagonally at the same angle.[Added By - KryssPteska]
/movefurn up # (1, 10, 50, 100)
/movefurn down # (1, 10, 50, 100)
/movefurn forward # (1, 10, 50, 100)
/movefurn back # (1, 10, 50, 100)
/rotatefurn left # (1, 10, 45, 90)
/rotatefurn right # (1, 10, 45, 90)

The chair is an important one!
Also a good hotkey to have is rotate right/left 180. This flips anything that is facing the wrong direction, without having to mash the 90 button twice.
Also, something I didn't know when I first began, is that furniture has no collision; meaning you can mush stuff together to make new designs or push it partways into the wall/floor.
Tip: As we all know if we've decorated for any length of time, any object can be dropped to make decorations. There are ALOT of general items, components, ship parts etc. that are very decorative, useful, and creative. So try everything[Added By - Nebulla]
1 If you drop a creature pet deed (made by bioengineers) the animal will stay in place, but turn it's head and look around displaying that animal's psersonality. This can be used for zoos, guard dogs, or even household pets. I like to put a jaxe on a chair or couch, or a doglike critter under a table waiting for leftovers to drop.
2 Watch out for items that phase through the wall into other rooms. A good exapmle is the wall mounted data terminal, as it has a long pole that sticks into the wall behind it.
3 Keep in mind that the images in the /examine and inventory windows are NOT TO SCALE. You will most likely have to experiment with several furniture types when you're meshing them together.
4 Think about how furiture would be arranged in the real world. For example: If this were real furniture, would a person be easily able to get everywhere they would need to get. This doesn't have a game effect, but it aids immersion.
5 The 'sitting in a chair' animation is based on floor height, not the height of the seat. Thus, placing a chair above or below it's default level creates a rather odd effect of either phasing through it or sitting on air.[Added By - Fonduro (via PM)]
Decorating
When attempting to use any item for decor or display, I suggest dropping it in your largest open room.
Rotate, Move, and see exactly how it reacts when you manipulate it.
This is also a good practice for items you have never dropped before.
Much of how we see things in inventory changes size drastically when dropped.
Any wearables in general will drop on the floor like they are being worn with arms extended.
Several items drop on floor with parts of the item below the floorline, a few objects have a offcentered axis.
Then there are items that are set on one side of a invisable cube, and it is the cube you are moving.
The basic commands used for item movement are as follows:
[ ] being the direction you wnat item to go
{ } being the amount you want item to move.
/move [up-down] {1-500} Will raise item from where it was dropped, or lower it from its raised position
/move [forward-back] {1-500} Will move item in the direction in accordance to how you are facing.
/rotate [left-right] {1-180} Will turn the item on its vertical axis by degree specified
/pickup Will pickup the item and place it back into you inventory
Common lines may be (with item to move targetted)
/move forward 50
/move up 100
/rotate left 90
If you find yourself doing alot of decor or displays, set frequently used commands into macros.
Then either place on hotkeys, or bind them in your keymap for quick access.
Please remember that houses have zones, whose walls are usually between rooms but sometimes within them.
You cannot move items above or beyond these zone walls.
A great 'bug' feature that comes in handy requires 1 empty container.
Open the container in a new window while It is in your inventory.
Drop container (with window still open) into room that you want to veiw contents off.
In the containers window, use the little 'arrow' in bottom left corner on containers icon to raise the inventory level up to the room.
The window should now display all items in the house zone[Added By - Ani_Cul]
I will edit the main post will all tips and tricks so that new people won't have to scroll through the responses to find everything.
PS: If you hate the idea, or have a better one, please at least post constructively

here's my two cents, something I did ages ago that fits into an ingame email so I can fwd it out easy:
Decorating
A good tip that I have always found that brings a lived in feel to my designs is to not always have objects lined up striate with the walls of the structure. i.e. /rotate (right / left) 25
I got tons so ill start off with this one which bugs me alot when it isnt done.
When placing a painting or something else against a wall make sure its perfectly flat against the wall. In most cases just move as close as you can towards the wall and drop the item, rotate to angle you like, then if the wall is flat just /move forward 40. Space to move may vary from wall to wall (some may be curved).
If someone offers you money to decorate their house, DO IT! Even if your currently busy or already doing another house. Simply take a break from what your doing and talk to the guy about what he wants. Just tell him you need to finish something up and will be started on his house as soon as possible (give a time period estimate). This way the person will feel secure and when your done and someone asks the owner of the house who decorated it the owner should be proud to say your name.
Be creative! You can turn a regular common loot item into something amazing. Just look at the entries for the resource and crafting tools competition!
