Thread: ghost towns

Player cities, even metropolis sized ones, all seem like ghost towns. I think it would be beneficial if people showed up on the radar if they are in municipal buildings. Then you would know if there is a doctor in the med center or a dancer in the cantina, encouraging you to stop in. It would make towns feel more inhabited.

well... there isn't much to do IN the cities....

a lot of my citizens are combat.. they go out to dathomire, lok, endor and such to fight.... make money.. only to come back heal, store loots, repair and back out again...

Not many like to just sit around the cantina and jabber away.. some do.. but not many

I have to agree with Chibi-Bar. I do not think we will ever get away from "ghost towns". A metropolis could have a 100 active citizens but maybe only have 10 or less actually in the city at one time. The reason you see so many people in Coronet or other major NPC cities is because many people log in and out of those major cities and are bartering or doing other small things before they go hunt.

It would be nice to have player cities that look exactly like NPC cities, but I don't think it will ever be possible. Hundreds of people log into a city at times, and the chance that a player city will have hundreds of people in their city is very slim unless it is a night of a party or other major event being hosted in that particular city.

Not all cities are ghost towns. Our city usually stays busy.

I agree with Steelheart ... our city, Mos Veros on Kauri was very strategically placed ... we put our mall right next to the Shuttle port. It seems that our merchants cant keep thier vendors stocked. That was a great marketing strategy. Our cloning center is also close to the Shuttle. However, if you need a mission terminal, trainers, cantina or hospital .. then you have to head down main street and look at the town. Our city bustles quite happily. Seems our mission terminals are in use and or cantina is frequented quite often. I almost always have a bustle of visitors. Our Urban Planner (Master Architect) laid out a very carefully planned design, we stuck to it, and it works perfectly. A very busy city indeed. We have yet to have but one griefing issue (spammer) and other than that, our Mos Veros life is good and flourishing. I think perhaps, just like in any marketing ... you have to provide what people NEED ... then market and spread the word and get them there. To qoute a great movie ... "If you build it, they will come".

So dont throw in the towel guys ... with a little careful planning, a little marketing, and a little hope ... you can make your cities thrive as well.

Ahn, tell me how many times can I just walk into your town and find 20 people wandering around? If it is a rare occurence then you aren't a bustling city you are just a normal one.

There is no reason to stay around in a town longer then to shop, heal, clone, and grab 2 missions. After that the city is just a pleasant place to be and that doesn't really draw the crowds. All PC's are is a group of homes and vendors but with a radius that labels them as a town. These have existed for many months but just weren't official. Those towns were ghosts and just because you have a few civic structures don't expect things to change.

Please tell me that Rori is going to become active again like it was in July and August! I have the largest player city on Rori and it's a ghost town. Will the Devs incorporate something to attract peeps to Narmle or Reustus?

We did our part by sticking with Rori, now how a little bit of help!

Is there such a thing as deleting a planet because of desertion?

Well you have to consider something. One, cities on the major planets (Corellia, Naboo and Tattoine) will have more people on them then the others. So just by stats, you should have more people in your city then other cities located on Talus, Dantooine, Rori or Lok.

Now, when I say ghost town, I don't mean people don't visit it at all and our merchants don't sell anything. My city, which is one of the biggest on Dantooine has a very successful business district. Our merchants have a very easy time selling their products (I even sold a Naboo PA hall today on my vendor). Our mission terminals are used and so is our shuttle. Our city was placed near the Crystal Caves, so it was used frequently because of holo-hunters. Now, of course, holos aren't worth much anymore, but we still get visitors.

Basically, when I say ghost-town, I mean NO player city will be like a NPC city. There is just no way unless a city event is taking place at a specific time. Sure, you might have 20 or more guys there some times, but all the time? It is very doubtful unless you have POI near you or something. There needs to be more reasons to be in a city, which is a problem with the number of cities currently on planets. With so many cities, there is no reason to go to one because they all have the same things (the bigger cities). Hopefully, the devs might put some content in to make player cities more of a "hotspot" instead of just for citizens.

I'm not suggesting that this would make cities busier. I was thinking that if I could see that someone was in a municipal building, I might be more inclined to stop in.

Frankly how busy your city is really depends on your citizens and the design of the town. Our city Consortia on lok has vendors of every craft in a fairly easy to find area and all are kept well stocked. We are also on lok so we are a haven for hunters and there are plenty of activities near by to keep our own hunter people busy.

In general we usually havefrom 20 to 30 people just on the main strip running around not including people who are crafting in their houses.

So for people who build big cities on places like naboo sure you have a big pretty city but unless you have alot of goods and services to offer you will not get much foot traffic. Also since there is less big game to hunt on places like naboo most of your hunters and combat folks will be elsewhere.

It was a challange to build a city out on lok opening week with rabid huge kimos spawning in agro range of the city hall made for some exciting times but it has really payed off in the end.

Hello you politics you

Not sure where else i may take this, so i try here where you politicians are. Maybe the core sys boards but i'll try here first.

Im a guild leader who are cooperating whit an another guild and theyre town.

The town is "quite" new but i have some questions.

Many player made towns are and will become so called "ghost" towns.

I really like to play this game and to contribute to it all. One of my main issues now is how to you create a "living" town, how do you prevent towns from"ghosthood"?

Is this a major issue for other mayors, or do you just accept how it is?

If this is a major issue what have been suggested and why?

I would really appreciate some feedback on this, because i really like this game and want to have as much fun as i can, and part of the fun is a strong, tight and friendly relationships whitin a town. "at leat for many of us"!

cheers

Well if you arnt a roleplay town, I would suggest making sure you have facilities that mean people can hunt from home. Encourage your crafters to group together in a mall and provide excellent crafting stations to encouage other crafters from outside to use them and possible move to your town.

Decorate, I can not stress this one enough . If people feel proud of where they live, they are far more likely to hang around.
