Given the number of dead starter cities that exist around the galaxy, would there not be any room at all in the code to allow for people to populate those cities to try and bring some life to them?
The EQ2 solution to player housing was very elegant in its execution and provided a means for players to have convenient housing around a major city without needlessly covering the areas outside of a city with needless sprawl.
To keep things fair to the architects, these apartments should not be more than equivalent to a small house in terms of storage (look at it this way, your bank deposit box is much easier to get to) and should have something in terms of a premium in maintenance over a small house (since you're not paying for the house to begin with). Another advantage would be to have no lot costs, which would make this popular for crafters who are always looking for ways to maximize the use of their lots.
Given that many people are already doing much the same thing with POB ships being used as housing, would the communities of various servers not be served by bringing people back out of the wilderness and offering players who have no ability to survive in the wilderness a chance to be a living part of these major cities?

I like the idea, but to keep it from killing architects, Id say make it cost more lots than a small house, that way you get one if you really want it, not because it costs 0 lots.

That's what I meant by a "premium". The other part of it could be keeping the floorplan pretty simple and sticking to an item cap similar to a ship or a one lot house. The other alternative, betterfor newer players, would be apartments with less than a full one lot house worth of storage and space.

Great idea. I've been posting things like this for awhile. I believe player cities are dead, and nothing more than ghost towns. Yeah, they were great when they launched late 2003, it was a novelty, but that novelty is gone now. Guilds use a means of recruitment into their guild just to populate a player city.
I agree that static cities should be populated, it would bring more life into these cities, and it will definitely give you a more "starwarsy" feeling.

since the very first time i heard about SWG, about a year before its launch, i wanted to live in Mos Eisley.
i just assumed that we'd be able to do so from the beginning. i mean it makes sense. it's one of the most logically sound ideas for a game like this, to be able to live in the iconic Star Wars cities so beautifully designed by the developers.
boy was i let down when i actually first played SWG (august 2004).
i agree that player cities were nice for a while, and some still retain their goodness, but the majority are just storage houses. the rest are factional base headquarters for PvP, and the occasional crafting center or Roleplaying venue.
something needs to be done to improve the living situation in SWG.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a new player that doesn't agree with you. I would even venture a guess that most players woud like this sort of addition. I remember when I first got entered the game I was trying to figure out how city housing worked. It didn't even occur to me that city apartments weren't implemented. I was unhappy to discover that the majority of city buildings were empty decorations.
Instanced apartments in buildings seems an obvious solution. My guess is that it'd be too much work for too little gain.
