Thread: Idea to make a pretty city layout possible
Would allow you to judge the cities perimiter very very easily, it would of course grow and shrink with the city size.
i'm with some of the other posters, though, in insisting that we also need things like roads, walls, terrain levelling tools, and so on.
i'm willing to yield on the issue of player city starports, though that would be darn cool.

One possibility is for the mayor (or militia member) to give the toon placing the house a "building permit" for a specific planned lot in the city, with constraints on house type (or at least pad dimensions) and orientation. To do this effectively, there would need to be an in-game zoning map accessible through the city terminal that takes into account terrain, existing structures, and outstanding building permits. The city planning tool is a good start, but much more work would be needed to incorporate terrain, structures, and permits. Terrain informationmay in principle be accessible client-side, but other information would need to be downloaded.

How about the Mayor sets up lots from which a player can choose to build on. Example would be setting a road down ... then setting up lots for Small Tatooine Houses facing the street. The player moving into the city could then choose to occupy this lot by placing his Small Tattooine House in the predestined place.
This could be done in great detail as you could have the shuttleport set up and allow for merchants to drop thier tents only in certain areas, so as to make a "mall". Could be set up to allow an industrial part of the city with all the factories running.

the devs have said they will never have player created walls.
