...but that's exactly what the arrow on the world map is.

I think of it more as a matter of immersion... it'd be cool to have little popups like in EQ tell us what particular region of Corellia or Dathomir we're stumbling across... if for nothing else just to be cool and break up that feeling of "endless wastes" sometimes..
Have a little message come up in nice Star Warsy lettering that says "The Jundland Wastes" or "Naboo Lake Country" like I say, just for immersion's sake
I don't think of it as being that immersive. Unless you live in the area, you won't know easily what that region is called. No tourist Rebel or Imperial should have a GPS marker to tell them YOU ARE HERE.

The arrow isn't the same thing as the pop-up sign the other guy was talking about. I was analogizing.

But if you can see every shuttleport, starport, NPC Guild hall, parking garage, mission terminal, registered vendor, etc etc on the planet... why not the region?

The regions should be named on the in-game map (Ctrl-V), at least as an overlay selection. It's kind of dumb to identify regionsin search resultsin-game and give any information about where that is. One would think thatt the major region names would be more likely to appear on the map than the locations ofpoints of interestthat most people are supposed to be ignorant of.

This has always bothered me for the same reasons that have been listed already. It makes no sence to use names that are not refered to in any other area. Part of me wonders if this was something that was set up back in Beta and was never fully removed. I too would like to see some system message spam telling me that I've entered Region X when I enter it. It would be a HUGE addition to immersion.
As for the point about the POI's... I find it funny that there's been waypoints to these for ages. You just had to talk to the NPC's that would send you there. Too many people felt "jiped" when the NPC didn't give them a reward for going there so the added in the POI's. That's a sad statment towards us players if you ask me....

I'm exactly in agreement. If there were no detail in the maps, or no maps, then the absence of region names would not be notable. However, the regions are large subdivisions, and could be expected to show up in world maps that are generally available. Smaller landform features such as the names of individual hills or streams would more likely be local knowledge. We actually have something like exactly the opposite of what is expected.Saego, Wanderhome.
Those structures are registered though, land areas are just areas.
