I suggested this idea about a year ago but noone listened hehe. I think it would be a fantastic idea to allow apartments and housing within NPC cities. It would add more life to the cities and more meaning. Noone is ever in mos eisley on my server and it supposed to be pretty populated. The apartment buildings on coronet was also a great idea as well as in theed.

I personly would like to see.....

Turn the moons of the 3 main planets, lok, talus and rori and turn them into player city planets and nooby zones. So ifu want a house thats where u would go.

then make all the other planets combat planets, no player houses , cities etc. (this would reduce the lag and enhance the gaming experiance. I remember the 1st months of playing, walking from anchorhead to weyfar/jabbas palace, dodging red dots and socking up the views, then out of no where there she stood, Jabba's palace. It was just so breath taking. now its house, houses, more houses , havesters, harvester..... and so on)

Make player harvesters only seen by the owner and players on the admin list. (any planet)

Allow players to purchase a house in a NPC city. All cities have houses districts so why not use them.

my 2 cents.

Here's something to consider: what we as players see in game, isn't seen on the server. The server doesn't have the overhead of rendering the graphics or anything like that. it only tracks characters/mobs, their locations/movement, vehicle location/movement, building location, character/mob/vehicle stats, and interaction/combat. the server's interface is probably just a menu system or a command line. Most of the audio-visual work is handled by the clients, other than the server saying "this is here, that's there, this here is moving this direction at this speed, this person's attack on this creature hit for this much damage" and so on.

Therefore, instancing apartments *might* add to the server load more than simply setting up floorplans with several apartments per floor (where stepping into an apartment from the hallway is like stepping into a house).

the problem with this would then become player cities. how many cities would go under because of this? you would have to make these apartments not use up lots, and that would create even more storage problems. if they did cost losts, people would uproot from their cities to move back into the static cities just for the novelty of it.

this would have worked great before player cities, but now it would have to be like the original post and make these placeable in player cities. it would also be nice to make things like roads and such. you, make it LOOK like a city, not a bunch of houses on a hillside...

yes, but you must take ALL servers into account, not just bloodfin, one of the larger servers along with Bria and Ahazi. smaller servers would suffer because PCs already stretch to make 85 or more patrons. many would leave thir PC to join a static city high rise apartment. as i said, the novelty of it alone would pull many away from their current city. this would have been a good idea BEFORE player cities, but not after. it's one of those "sounds like a good idea, and sounds star warsy" kind of things, but if you apply it other things will break and people will generally be upset. after all, the main purpose of player cities right now is Guild town and Research Centers for crafters. all of these places are supplemented by non guilded players who love to live in a star warsy atmosphere like Mos Eisley.

But we are also assuming this would come out long after the CURB which theoreticaly will lure some of the people who have quit back to SWG along with several new players

This issue has been solved in Everquest II and could be applied to SWG.

basically a players room in an Inn or a house is Instanced and like the houses of SWG has access controls. The rent would basically be paying maintenance, and instancing the apartment off would lighten the load on the servers (could be a dedicated apartment instancing server on the back end)

If you quit paying your rent, your stuff goes poof and the apartment becomes available for another player (perhaps there would be a waiting list on an apartment building to determine who got the next available apartment in the building, if you didnt claim the opening in a certain period of time, it goes to the next person on the list)

Since there would only be so many apartment building buildings, there would be a fixed number of instances so overloading a server with apartment instances should not be a problem. (I would like it if the urban sprawl that exists outside of Cnet got condensed to a degee into the cnet high rises.)

Or how about both? Appartments in Static citys and in player citys? And yes they would take up 1 lot for small (1/8 a level), 2 lots for medium (1/4 a level),4 lots for large (1/2 a level)and 7 lots for a suite (one whole level)

People will stil love the conveinence of having all there trainers in one city.

Major Guilds will still like to have a city.

And if a few citys go under, I say good ridance. On blodfin atleast there are way to many citys I dare say. Tatooine I lost desert planet with little colnisation is practicaly Corisant for crying out loud!

Those citys that survive would be the strong ones that diserve to survive.

Also, I belive that appartments will become like they are in RL, a mid way between homeless and Home Owning. The poor would love them because they should be cheeper than owning a house (definatly in short term mabey not long term) The middle class would love to have there own house because they own it and would provide more storage space. The rich would love the suite because its... well... a suite

Wow. Lots of good ideas.

Idea

Apartment buildings could be a placeable object for player cities, like flora and statues.

The city gains the revenue from the apartment or a portion of it.

Practical Considerations:

No windows (to reduce time to live in the game). Windows would be great, though.

Access:

Stairwell to individual doors or Instanced access through a terminal. Both have their appeal.

Player City only or Not?
My personal peeve about static cities is that most of them are uninhabited. I would not be sad if many of them were deleted from the game entirely (Mos Espa/Entha anyone?). I like player cities and would rather see PCs enhanced and static cities marginalized as much as possible.

This is a fantastic idea that needs serious consideration. I know people will cry about loosing their player cities, but how many really? Is it reasonable for so many people who want to live "where it's at" to be denied so that a few people can have a career path? From what I can tell, the player city idea is not working very well. Yes, there are excpetions, but they are just that EXCEPTIONS. By and large player cities are gohst towns with a mall in th emiddle somewhere.

I guarantee that even if most player cities die, there will be a numbe of people who hate it and will choose to live in the outskirts (perhaps because they shy away from Imperial attention?).

By the way, I don't know about this "infinite" apartments in each building idea... it sounds cheap to me. Big static cities have enough buildings to accomadate quite a few apartments. It is time that the big, sweet-looking buildings in cities mean something.
