Thread: Eating and drinking should be required not a buff
Don't forget the large market of consumable stims. I'm sure medics make some decent credits from StimB sales, and BEs with pet stims and vitality packs.
Besides, even if food was required, all people would do is stock up on crates of spiced tea and bofa treats, leaving the chef profession pretty much unchanged.
I think having a wider variety of things food can do would definitely be the best thing that could happen. Stat buffs, skill buffs, status effects(I'd like to see a "Berserker Brew", which gives the drinker the equivalent of a brawler's berserk skill for 60s), increasing burst run duration (maybe not as useful with mounts and vehicles), attack speed boost, etc are all things I think could be easily included. Now balancing them is probably a whole 'nother story. Or how about a Zombie muffin: while it lasts, going under zero HAMdoesn't incap you, but if you're not healed up when it wears off (and maybe heals are only half as effective) it causes a system shock that sends you directlyto the clone center. Ok, that might fit better as a spice.

Alright food and drink is in the game but there is very little reason for it. Sure you have to feed your pets every so often but that's it. A Chef is pretty much useless and the "buff" you get from food is more annoying thanuseful.
So, your in PvP, you and your enemy both have Doctor buffs so high that the only way your going to be killed is by a lucky hit to the mind pool. Your enemy has eaten Bivoli and Fishak and now has 1k more Mind bar than you do for the next 12+ minutes.
Melee charaters use food all the time to lessen the drain when they use specials so they can chain special attacks and kill there targets faster.
One other good example. Your 1 hit from mind incap, DB, loosing condition on your items, and having to repay insurance cost. You take fishak (or other mind buff food) and INSTANTLY you now have 500 more mind, saving you arse.
Still think Chef buffs are useless? The problem is people do not know what chef foods can do in their current form. I think they can be very powerful.
Alright food and drink is in the game but there is very little reason for it. Sure you have to feed your pets every so often but that's it. A Chef is pretty much useless and the "buff" you get from food is more annoying thanuseful. I say make food and drink consumption required. Have your stats drop a little bit over time for as long as you don't eat and/or drink. After a day have your abilities slip a little and different foods will restore this amount by different amounts. This way Chefs are needed and really good Chef's will be greatly rewarded. Have them able to sell rations on the bazaar that will stave off the hunger etc....
agree?
Chef's have many useful buffs - though not what we might hope them to be in the future. I NEVER go into any kind of fight without downing a Thaktillo and a Sunburn. I have numerous customers equally dependent on other buffs. So - this premise - that food is merely annoying, isn't really true. Isn't anything like true. The problem is that we have to narrow a variety of useful buffs, and that our buffs don't compare to doc buffs, etc.
If food were required, we would be the only professions whose product _is_ required. You don't have to own a house, a droid, even a weapon, even clothing. I personally think we are already at an adavantage over other crafting professions due to the fact that we sell consumables. A tailor sells shoes, the buyer might not come back for months, if ever. I sell a crate of Fishak, the buyer will be back as quick as he uses them up. This advantage is going to become even more obvious when we have buffs that people can't help but look for.
As an aside:
What excites me most about the future of chef is the variety that will become possible with a tree full of useful buffs. Instead of everyone making the same handful of products, chef's will be able to differentiate themselves on their menu. Since every chef will not be able to make anything like every item, you'll become known as the chef that sells this or that. We will get more chef's no doubt - but there will also be many different kinds of chefs - everyone will have to specialize, to some degree.

if you think food is useless now you must not be really fighting on any level. The more the better. I never go into battle without food. If it didn't stack on doc buffs, then you'd have reason to complain... but the way it is now, he who has the best food and drink wins.
