Well, if you're in the process of milking, I'd assume you've got a good grip on it, so the critter should pull you along.
Of course, that might spook it into running, continuing to drag you along.
/has visions of my Bothan toon getting hauled around Dantooine behind a very upset Piket.
Hmm....maybe that's not such a good idea.

you completely lost me here! I don't see how this helps in any way.

update..
Even if you were on follow for the creature which is what i now gather from the post it does not help if the creature warps which alot do. You can put yourself on folow but if the creature warps you do not, you may run after the warped creature but before you get near it you will get the message that you are too far away to milk the creature. You have to stay within a very close proximity to the creature to successfuly milk. I have had many hours of experience here and the best way I have found is to simply stay in front of the creature. I have had very few warp on me while doing this.

On what planet are you milking? I've had HORRIBLE failures with pikets and everything else on Dantooine. I've had better success with brackasets on Dathomir or just about anything but fambaa on Naboo. I think the problems must be due in part to lag. On Naboo, I was able to get 7k of milk by myself in 3-4 days, and I bought about 7k more. Brackasets are nice b/c they just stand there doing nothing. Bolle bols are similar, they like to lie around.
Nevertheless, you're right. Milking should not be such a big pain, no matter what planet.

Actually, there are 3, lol. You forgot abut the instance where neither the creature nor I moved, and yet I still got the message saying it had moved too far away. Granted, it could have been a lag issue, but it had to have been lag on the server's end and not mine, because the creature didn't actually move for many, many seconds and I wasn't experiencing any game lag whatsoever.
I can safely say that the floating creature issue has been around long before the last patch went live. I've been struggling with this milking thing for a long while now, and while it may have become more pronounced since the last patch (haven't noticed...it's always happened with great frequency for me), it's definitely not anything new. I am always 2 steps ahead of whatever I'm milking with my hand on my little mouse button getting ready to chase that sucker down. This last time, I was lucky enough to catch the creature without starting over again twice out of about 80 tries. I kept trying to "Collect Milk" while I was already collecting milk in hopes of tricking the system into thinking that there had never been a break in the milking. Didn't work. All other times, I've had to keep trying until the creature decided to stay still or lay down.
/Harvest milk was a beautiful thing. If I could kill the creatures and even get half of the milk harvest as I would from a live animal, I'd jump for joy (although, if they would just fix the floating and warping, I wouldn't be so quick to kill them for their milk). I hope that all of the mention by the various profession correspondants will at least merit an acknowledgement of the problem with mention of a fix. Like YESTERDAY.

This was, in fact, on Dantooine. I guess it's time to try another planet, but it's just so darned convenient (ok, well obviously not *that* convenient since I'm here B&Ming about it) to do it in my backyard.
I know that with pikets you can get upwards of 100 units per milking. Are bracksets as, um, milky? I guess I'll try Naboo the next time I feel like getting some milk, and I'll stick to Dantooine when I feel like getting a healthy dose of frustration.

Just to throw a spanner in the works here... I've been milking for the past couple of days on Dantooine & haven't had any problems at all (other than them just running off occasionally, which seems 'normal'). Also a guildy has milked about 8k units for me too & he hasn't told me he had any problems either. We've both been milking from ~level 234 Picket Longhorn missions spawned from our player city on Eclipse, if it's likely to make any difference.

/rant
I went out milking again tonight. Again, it was disastrous. There were so many bugs that occured every time WITHOUT FAIL, I finally had to step away from my computer in frustration. SOE is going to owe me a lot of money when I sue for the costs of my dental work from all the tooth grinding I do.
Bug 1: I can start milking from 14m away, yet the creature all of a sudden floats 6m in the air and he's moved "too far away to continue milking".
Bug 2: I'm milking and the creature disappears for a split second, only to return 60m away from me. "The creature has moved too far away to continue milking." No, really?
Bug 3: I'm milking and I'm 6m away. I don't move. The creature is not moving either. "The creature has moved too far away to continue milking." WHAT? Neither of us have moved. Where has it gone? 5 seconds later...POOF...another warp to 60m away.
Now, explain something to me. If I've relaxed this creature enough to get my hands on its teats or udders or whatever they have, why is it BURST RUNNING away from me? If I've relaxed this creature, why is it levitating?
I filed 3 bug reports outlining each of these instances. I will continue to file 3 bug reports daily, possibly multiple times a day because this bug is ruining a task that should not be so difficult. I would gladly slide out of my chair after 5 minutes if it meant that I could effectively milk a creature without it "sliding" across the map. I urge you all to continue filing bug reports to alert them that this needs to be dealt with. If you're at all tired of chasing one piket or bantha for 5 minutes for 60 units of milk, please, please /bug this issue.
/end rant...but please send in your bug reports, folks!

On a serious note, the milking issues have been brought to the devs attention by myself, the Scout corr, the Ranger corr, and the BE corr (since they need milk too). With the removal of /harvest milk (sorry to say, that appears to have been a bug, although I am petitioning for it to come back in some form), this has gotten even more depressing.

Brackasets don't give as much milk, unfortunately. The only things that give a similar amount are fambaa (pain in the butt) and bolle bols. I find that it's all randomized anyway. Sometimes a kaadu will give only 15 milk, then sometimes 50. A Bolle bol will give as much as 105, as little as 30. It doesn't seem to be affected by skill in creature harvest, including the use of veghash.
