Do I need to use planet specific resources for the ones that ask for them? (ie, Vasarian Brandy requiring Talusian compnonents ans Bespin Port Tatooinian) I used regular ones and it works but maybe that's why my results aren't that great? Thanks.

The only item that has actual planet-specific requirements is Bespin Port (needs tubers, fruits, and berries from Tatooine).

The resource slots in the schematic have two parts:

"Descriptive Name"

--------Resource requirement

You can see this in the lower-right corner of the crafting window on the resource selection screen. You used to be able to see it when examining the draft schematic, but that got a little flakey in this last patch.

The Descriptive Name is just some in-game fiction about the ingredients. The actual resources needed are always specified in the resource requirement line, and may have no bearing on the descriptive part. For Vasarian Brandy, the descriptivepart is "Talusian Fruit", but the requirement is just "20 units of Fruits". For Bespin Port the descriptive name is "Aged Fruit Additive", and the requirement is "25 units of Tatooinian Fruit".

As long as the resource you're using falls into the category named, it will act just like any other.

As for your results not being that great, that can be caused by a few things. Are you experimenting on the brandy? Are you using an additive? Despite the impression you might get from established chefs, +400 / 45m Brandy isn't that easy to get (especially if you only have 10 experimentation points). You have to build up a hoard of good resources, have access to good quality additives, and (optionally) acquire +Food Experimentation tapes for the extra experimentation points.

i think of it as it isnt easy but it seems that way, it takes me about 2-4 weeks to make a single food (unless i happen to have every resource) so it isnt easy sorta, once you get the hang of it, you regularly ask for masses of resources on the boards make food, plan ect. but as far as your question just listen to Sciguyco
