Thread: Two professions compared... exp rates
So I've been working on chef & doctor. Mostly chef, healing in my spare time.
It took me maybe 2 weeks to get my artisan skills up to master homemaker. I then worked on the to chef grind very hard for a full week. Next was cooking I, which was another week. It would have been much longer, but I discovered factories and a couple of wastril bread sessions got me about 2/3 of what I needed. All this was slow not just because of the speed of crafting, but becauseit was very time consuming gathering enough resources and also managing a shop to support myself. So that's3-4 full weeks (at my play schedule) to chef + 1 skill, half of that time or more just in the chef line. (I know others have done it faster.. I go at a rate that is both enjoyable and fits my RL schedule, and it didn't work to powercraft for hours on end each day as he did.)
In the meantime I was maybe on my 2nd tier of medic from healing people I ran past or healing in the med center as I crafted (very casual medic). When I hit cooking I, I started being invited to heal for a group of friends on Lok. I spent almost no time preparing for these hunts, crafting stims on the field out of resources I had on hand. I have joined 3 hunts on Lok total, each lasting for maybe 2 hours. Two hunts got me to master medic. My last hunt (last night) got me doctor + 1 skill, healing just 2 people. That's a total of maybe 4 play sessions (if you count my casual heals to 2nd tier as one session) to get to the second tier of an elite profession, where the same in chef was weeeeeeks. And to get to doctor I had to progress all four lines of medic, where as to get to medic I just needed one line of artisan.
Well, I'm overjoyed to be a doctor. But boy does that make chef progression depressing in comparison!
Disclaimer: I think doctor is pretty crazy fast overall, this isn't the same for all professions.
You see more master doctors than any other elite profession. From my friends' experience, all the crafter elites are a lot like Chef, and what I love is how everyone hates doing it, they complain about it to no end, and yet they continue to do it! Mixing professions makes everything go faster, and you may end up finding something you like that you would have never expected. I personally discovered the fun of the scout tree, and I temper my cooking to keep myself happy.
Good luck with the Doctor tree!

master architect is due to PA's powerlevelling one guy to make their hall. They're out of the general equation, and shouldn't be used for gatherring stats. They need more xp than any other profession, and though they sell everything they get, they still just get 50% exp... so, each tier takes 55000/32000 = 1.71875 more xp for them. Assuming they get 50% uxp for everything they make, they still have to use more resources then us. They just get more xp/item(so not as much grinding). Yes, it is a bit easier when you needn't grind, but ultimately, the speed of progression depends on the resources you're getting, and its no faster for them than us. All the elite artisan tree's are fairly balanced in xp rates. A solo'ing architect would advance about as fast as a solo'ing chef. Some professions also attract more powerlevellers than others.
Some non-artisan professions on the other hand are very easy... they will probably get nerfed as time goes by... Chances are smuggler spice tree xp wont be so easy for long, and bio-engineers wont have it so easy for long either...
Excluding the combat professions, the most I see are : Master Architects, Master Medics/Doctors, and I have seen a master Creature Handler, and Master Weaponsmith. Those are the ones I remember or I have seen.
One reason may be that these are the most popular non-combat fields.
Speaking as a Master Architect (leveled on my own power, no guild) - it's still a lot of grind. Granted, we *can* sell most of what we make -- one of the plusses. We do not get ANY uxp, though. Not even 50%.
That's one thing I'm enjoying about being a Chef. There's that motivation to have others utilize our products.
