Thread: We could've told him this at launch.

I was reading through Q-3P0's post on the Test Center board about the harvester "nerf" that SirVimes dispelled. Q passed on a message from the dev (the same one SirVimes did), and while I was somewhat relieved about the harvesters, I found this vaguely worrying:

This is really why experimentation is hard to work with:

  1. We have to set up the experimentable data on the schematics and make sure its all correct.
  2. We have to write a script that properly weights that data and assigns it properly.
  3. We have to then give those result values meaning in some system.
  4. Then we have to expose that data to the player in a meaningful way.

We aren't really skilled at doing all of that right now, but we are getting better. More systems will get more meaningful and fun experimentation as we go along. (And we'll revamp old ones to be better...)

It looks like the chef schematics are batting at best 1 for 4 on these, especially regarding filling. 1) The schematics are definitely incorrect, 3) the resulting value (fill percentage) has little meaning in any system, because 4) the data is exposed as a mostly useless bar graph. The data weighting may be working "properly", but I doubt having an experimentation category based on Unit Toughness and/or Shock Resist (the two things I've seen affect filling most) is a good design decision when the required resources hardly ever contain those stats.

Here's hoping they are "getting better" quickly...

Well, at least you know that I am not B.S.ing ya guys.

I am not even sure the scripts are working right. It seems to me that taste has absolutely no bearing on our successes...nor has anybody ever gotten above 52% success I believe.
