Well, you'll need Master Chef for the full range of experimentation points, but that's pretty much a given for any crafter profession, so you probably already knew that.

Having 44xx artisan gives you the full 10 points (11 if you're human) of experimentation when making artisan-level foods, which have a pretty good market.

Higher survey skills (xxx4) are helpful, but not an absolute requirement. You can still survey/sample anything with just the Novice Artisan surveying, but you'll have a more limited range so you'll be doing the "survey" action more often.

Artisan xx3x is a requirement for the lowest-level vendors, which is a necessity. Chef is a high-volume prof, so you won't be able to make any real sales with just the bazaar. Merchant skills increase the number of vendors you can have (allowing you to sell in more locations, or organize your product in a single location) and increase the number of items you can have for sale on those vendors. You probably won't need full Master Merchant for a while (if ever), since we sell almost everything in crates. I got by with merchant 3001, which let me register on the planetary map (still a little useful, even after the global vendor search was added to the bazaar) and have up to four vendors with a total of 1250 items.

Chef also uses subcomponents from other professions, so if you want to be more self-sufficient you can take up those skills. The main ones are BE (for the enhancement tissues) and tailor (for a cask subcomponent).

Some possible templates:

Master Chef / Artisan 4440 / Merchant 3002 / Tailor 0010 / BE 0404 : Can make all foods with max experimentation, make your own Trim for casks, good size vendor storage (5 vendors, total items 1750), and can make all tissues (at max experimentation) except the MBE level ones.

Master Chef / Master BE / Artisan 4441 / Novice Merchant : Can make all foods, make all tissues, need to sub-contract out for trim, and has decent vendor storage (3 vendors, total items 750).

You can also try going Chef / Scout / Combat to allow you to gather your own creature resources, although this will probably require grouping with higher level players to get sufficient stack sizes per harvest. Something along those lines could be Master Chef / Scout 0040 / Master Elite Combat (non-hybrid) / Artisan 4430. Alternatively, you could do Master Chef / Scout 2040 (for mask scent so you can also milk) / Artisan 3430 / Master Elite Combat. That second one may be a better choice for a Human character, since you would still get 10 experimentation points when making artisan foods. Either of those will put you at roughly CL 56.
