Thread: The right ingredient
I've been experimenting a bit lately with the stewed gwouch, and had some very interresting results.
When I was grinding my way up to entree II I was using water and than stacks of rice to make my gwouch. They were both of good quality, and the results I got when I had a great succes were like 5%, 9%, 13% for respectively flavor, nutriment and quantity.
Then I got entree II, then cooking I and I started going over all my recepies again to see how much I could improve them. Came the Gwouch again. I started using ingredients that had high overquality, then flavor and then nutriment value (or whatever it's called, can't remember the name). Nothing really gave me intersting results. Then I thought to myself that using the same ingredient for both organics was a shame, so I decided to change the seasoning. I used meat, tuber, fungi, hides, flowers and some more. Results were still more or less the same. I was on the verge of moving to another dish when I spot 7 units of wood in my inventory and thought "let's use them for a last gwouch then delete the 2 leftovers"
Came the revelation. My flavor went from 5-6 up to 10% ! Other stats were slightly better too. That had never happened before. The wood wasn't even special, if I recall it had a nice overquality of 600 or more, but no flavor or nutrimental value.
This could mean 3 things.
1) Recepies are broken, this as no rationnal reason, it's just a flaw in the system.
2) There are combos of ingredients that are very effective. In my case it could be vegetables + wood, or fungi + soft wood since it's what I used. Obviously since there aren't different types of water it doesn't matter.
3) Some subcategories of a given ingredient will give better result even with worse stats. In the case of the gwouch, although you can use any organic for the seasoning, (soft) wood is better than most other organics.
Same thing happened to me with Starshines. Try using radioactive or igneous ore and you'll get great quantities, but low flavor. Change it for gemstones or low grade ore, and the results are much more even. With good gas, cereals and ore I can get a 22, 21, 22 unexperimented Starshine. If I change the ore for some radioactive, I'll get something like 13, 17, 25. Even if the ore is 200 overquality and the radioactive is 990 overquality.
Did someone else notice this ? Also, could others chefs try experimenting with recepies so we can gather knowledge about our trade ? I think being a good chef is much more subtle than one could think.
I think materials that don't have some stats listed really do have those stats but they are hidden. I once madea StarshineSupriseand it came out pretty good, I switched out the metal to a new one with lower overall quality(No flavor is listed on metals) and it came out with a higher flavor rating. I did it a couple times so it didin't seem to be a poor creation.
The crafting guide from the main website says that if it's not listed the statdefaults tozero which might not be the case.
It would be nice if we could get two different kinds of resources that have the same properties to test. Like getting fish meat with X stats and carnivore meat with the same stats and seeing if there is indeed a "better" meat fora recipe. But finding resources like thatwould be almost impossible.
But copper might just taste better than iron regardless of quality.
