I just made Master Bounty Hunter. I just took up Novice Chef with my other account. Why did I take up Chef? I love to PVP. Yes that is right! Chef is the new UBER PVP profession!
Seriously, it is but indirectly. I have been many things, artisans and combatants. Out of everything I have tried, I love Bounty Hunter the most. Bounty Hunter is lots of fun if you like to PVP because of all the different weapons, specials, and armors.
I have a Master Weaponsmith toon. I understand what it is like to scour the galaxy looking for the best resources, and after a while it kinda sucks. Eventually you get to the point where you just want to be able to make a decent product and you want to compete with Joe down the street even though you were not here when he used the resource duplicaiton exploit to duplicate all the best resources or if you decided you did not want to be an exploiter.
What you need to understand, however, is that a combat profession focusing on PVP can also have the same type of rewards. Many PVPers have mastered many different professions (none of mine were for the holo but I have mastered 10 professions.
Just like finding that ultimate resource, PVPers are always looking for that ultimate armor, gun, stat arrangement and anything to give you the slightest edge in a round of combat. This is where foods come in. As a person who has pretty much done it all, I see PVP uses for most all the foods (assuming they really work), and that is why I decided to make my support toon Chef.
You have to look at it this way. All combat classes are not the same. And doctor buffs are not practical for sustained PVP in many cases. For most people you pay 10k for a doctor buff, and the first time you die, the buff is gone. But with FOODS you can pop them any time you want, and stay in the action. Also the food I may pop will depend on who I am fighting, and what my current strategy is.
Most people cannot put on a full suit of composite armor because their substats are too low. The armor could be really high protection and high encumbrance. Some people get doc buffs, so they can put get all their armor on. Now you can have a couple foods to do this. If your primary intentions are just to get all of your armor on, then you need a couple sub-stat foods and it does not really matter that much how long it lasts.
Who am I fighting? What is my weapon of choice? What is their stat arrangement?
If I am fighting a TKM with a high health and mind, but low action, I am gonna want to use my carbine. Carbines use action for their specials so I want to pop a food with action substats that will last me through that round of battle. High action substats even in the range of 300-500 can significantly affect my ability to take that person out very fast with much less risk to myself. Since BH’s are vulnerable to dizzy (dizzy = dead for BH vs. TKM), I will likely pop a food that will decrease my vulnerability to dizzy or KD.
What if I am fighting a Master Commando with low mind? Well I am gonna have to use my pistol to pull that mind bar down. Commandos are very deadly when they hit, but they have difficulty hitting moving targets. This means I am going to have to burst run, to keep them from one shotting me. This will also decrease my accuracy so I will need something to incerease my chance of hitting them as well. For this scenario I will be looking for foods that will give me burstrun efficiency and increase my accuracy.
Also something that would absorb the majority of the damage from the first 3-5 shots would be really important here since a commando generally only has a few shots to win the battle.
Am I raiding a base? The #1 thing that kills a base raid is mind poison. If they are using a combat medic, I want my group to be protected from them. I will be using something to help me resist poison if possible since mind poison is generally the deciding factor of base raids. Now if this product does not work, you need to talk to the devs about that, but there is definitely need. If something does not give the expected effect you guys need to alert the devs, not just accept that the market will not adopt it because it doesn’t work.
Am I fighting a pistoleer? Many of pistoleers shots are not that powerful but they fly in fast. Also pistoleers are hard to hit because they have dodge. A bh has no dodge, so against a pistoleer I am gonna want something to even those odds, and help me evade some of those fast moving strikes. I will also want something that improves my ranged defense or increases my accuracy so they are less likely to dodge.
Am I fighting a rifleman ? Riflemen are real killers at the master level. Those t21’s with a good headshot can take your mind bar out fast. My best chance of taking them out is to make them do little damage for those first 3-5 shots. By that time hopefully their own mind will be low due to ham costs from their specials. (unless they popped a brandy) A little accuracy (another food) for when I decide to take out the rest of their mind will help too.
Incap time? Woah! I have been in many PVP battles where I have been incapped, my team rushes forward, and I am still lying there. All I need is to be able to hit a stim and I am all good.
Mind stims? There are foods that will instantly heal mind for 300-400. That is incredible. This is not brandy.
I know there are many others, but my chief concern is where I am gonna put all these foods and how I am gonna find space on my macro bar. Also as far as mind is concerned, I can use moun gold for that. Give me the foods for the special effects. In my opinion, I would rather not get hit in the first place than to have to have higher stat pools. I believe the DESIGN allows us to fill in our weaknesses and make targetted improvements that will allow us to be better in combat.
The result is that the DESIGN of the Chef is right on. If certain foods are not effective enough, or are bugged that is not a problem with the DESIGN, that is a bug or tweak request that needs to be submitted.
Different combat classes have different weaknesses and strengths. These weakness could be action usage, health usage, lack of defenses or dodge, accuracy problems, vulnerablility to KD etc. Most all of the foods in the new Chef line have some benefit. Of course if they are too pricey, then only certain ones will be used. I want to experiment with all of these foods in PVP, so I will just make a Master Chef toon so I can see what works. The things that do need to be improved, I will post on this board.
One thing that I see so far is that this will not be very friendly for someone who does want to use all the foods. There are no commands that I can type in at the command promt (I don’t think) to eat a particular food. For example I don’t think I can dynamically type in /consume bespin. This is an issue that does not immediately appear to affect CHEF itself, but it could influence the variety of food people use. As a bounty hunter I decide which weapons I am going to use based on my target. I would like to be able to dynamically choose a particular food from my inventory for the same reasons.
Now that people are not holo grinding quite so much, people will begin to settle into a mastered profession. At master level the only thing that differentiates you from another Master in your class is your tools and how you use them. CHEF foods add a dynamic array of tools for people to use in effort to differentiate their combat styles.

Shhhh, or those "Nerf Chefs!" posts might get serious!
It's good to know people are excited about more than BE-enhanced brandy. I agree with you that the design of the new menu is very well done. There's only a few "holes" in it (missing a Con/Stam/Will buff like the old veghash, missing a +counter attackfood, etc) which hopefully will show up in upcoming hotfixes/publishes/expansions. And some foods need some tweaking/fixing, but I'm pretty optimistic.
And I'm not sure if I read it right, but incap reduction foods require that you take them before you're incapped, not during the incap. And it's a little up in the air whether they're working right.

After reading this I suddenly wanted to be a chef
I could make it worse.
As a Master Doc/Master Rifleman combo I have all of my stats migrated towards mind(human). This puts my stats as follows:
Health: 400
Strength: 400
Constitution: 400
Action: 400
Quickenss: 400
Stamina: 400
Mind: 1100
Focus: 800
Willpower: 1100
Now as a Master Doc I am always fully buffed and all health and action stats are usually at least 2.5k across the board. My problem has always been as a rifleman/doc I suck my mind up better than a hoover sucks up dirt. Now with these new foods(all BE enhanced) and a muon I can get my mind stats up to:
Mind: 3816
Focus: 4716
Willpower: 5316
Now this pretty much makes me invincible as I also have armor that is nearly all 90% composites. The muon lasts 8 mins, the the Canap would last 14 mins and the Brandy lasts 30mins. Obviously some fluctuation based on quality foods on your server but this should at least give you some idea lol.

Master Doc/Master Rifleman
Now with the new foods you can just call me GOD, because I am unstoppable muhahhahah.

Oh yeah I realize you have to pop it before incap. The thing is that there are many times in which I could have saved myself our my team by having a shorter incap time. In many cases where I do get incapped I may have tried to use a medical stim, but did not get it off on time. For combatants who have novice medic skills and good stimpacks, the short incap times can be the difference between your squad winning or loosing. If you are the first person to rush in on a raid you will likely be the first to be incapped. If your support comes in after you, they may have cleared the area. If your incap duration is very short, then you can get back into the battle faster and save your team.

People like this man are why I love this proffesion. I know I make my pvp customers come in every so often, give them a handfull of different foods, go out and tell me what they use and how they use it for exactly the reason of being able to tell people information in this post (as well as collect bugs). Thanks for the post.

I had several of my customers tell me that Cavellian Creams worked for them and they came and bought more, so i guess that means it does.

Or how about this, you go master doctor, buff yourself anytime you need them, then simply buy varasian brandy from your local chef.
