Thread: Why Do You Love Chef?

Yoyo all of my Chef friends, I was curious. . . Why do we love Chef? with all of the crazy beginnings of grinding and the ups and downs I've run in to what keeps us going? For me it's the people and interaction while I cook, though it can be money too hehehe. In many looks Chef could seem almost boring, after all who wants to cook and cook and cook to master a profession? Hmmm me. Of course you have the other professions to get wastril bread off your mind.

Plus I wanna know how some of us fund our beginnings of grinding the first trees and beyond. Basically I want a profession that can help me make creds in descent time and still not interfere with my grinding.

Curiosity of the Novice Chef, Thanks guys and gals

For me there is a few simply reasons why I chose Chef and continue to remain one:

1. I love providing something that people can use. In Everquest, I was a grandmaster baker, brewer, tailor, blacksmith, potterer, fletcher, and god knows what else on multiple characters...I love crafting...I enjoy a good grind...

2. I like feeding my friends...I have customers that have bought from since I started...they usually receive preferential treatment and get additional treats when I can deal with them in person...

3. I love the RP intereaction we can muster with this profession.

As for how I funded the start...long story short, I sold wastril, gwouch, and IMs on the bazaar in the early days, backed by charde..all good sellers in the first 2 months of the game. When artisan terminals showed up I ran them for hours to build up cash.

A horrible answer comin up on my part, but its the truth, chefs make creds. Eerif Likes creds

With the absense of many chefs, unlike the other crafting professions, chefs are uncommon (well, depending on server), therefore when people want food, there are a limited amount of chefs who can cater to them.

Plus amazing my friends that I can get an 1100+ mind boost with food alone is fun

I like chef first of all because there are very few, and I try to go with professions that not many people do. Also, since there aren't many, the customers arent spread in many directions so there is a large profit margin. Plus I just like crafting professions (sounding weird seeing as how I was the biggest bum about crafting anything before I started chef). I can't wait till they enhance our profession more.

I have always had fun with a Chef, even when we had stat bugs, stack bugs, and all sorts of assorted problems. The interaction with others is great. Since a lot of people aren't very knowledgable they ask questions about what we can make, and I ask questions back about what their needs are, and through the info given there I can provide them with what they are seeking. It's great when they come back and say "that combination worked perfectly, I'd like some more" or "your food/drink saved my butt many times." That kind of stuff makes me forget about the problems and really value what we can do right now. I also feel like I'm working with my customers, whereas with architect I often feel like a slave to them. And besides, making food and drinks is just inherently cool, and the money is nice.

As for funding myself in the beginning, I sold resources. At the time I was doing the grind there were only small flora farms. I decided I was going to steadily move up the Chef tree, and build up some wealth by selling metals. I also ended up moving up architect simultaneously, so that produced some extra income for me. I think I ended up paying for three-fourths of my training from NPCs, so grinding quickly at that time wasn't very feasible.

Ditto on the rarity factor. I liked playing around with SWG's crafting system, but weaponsmiths, armorsmiths and architects were all over the place. Droid engineers, while cool in theory, were (and still are to a point) pretty useless. Tailor had a bit of a draw, which is why I started up the Dom Arts tree in the first place. But I had a lot more fun advertising food and drinks while tooting my horn in the cantina (used to be musician), so when I got the necessary crafting xp, I trained novice Chef instead.

I love the variety of things that can be made, and I'm really stoked about the revamp, where the variety of recipes will (hopefully) equal a variety of effects. Most other professions seem to get maybe 2 or 3 new schematics per box (not counting components), chefs get five or six. Each new skill box (other than Cooking) meant more things to make, see what they did, and experiment on to see how I can make it better.

And, as perverse as this sounds, I liked how food schematics couldn't be trusted to tell you what stats you need. Did I mention I'm a bit of a math nerd? Reverse engineering the inner workings of the crafting system, determining how changing the ingredient stats affected the outcome without being able to use the schematic listings as a map gave a pleasant break (quit laughing) during the long Ithorian Mist grind.

"Expert Bartender" is arguably the coolest title in the game, with "Iron Chef" a very close second.

I have to admit, that after playing DAoC for 2 years+, the thought that everyone can carry their own "buffbot" really appealed.

I was so sick of games, where to get anywhere you needed 2 accounts - one a buffbot - in order to play at the same level as everyone else. Chef allows every player, no matter what their race or profession, to carry their own buffs, and use them as and when needed.
This gives players an independance that other games just don't give you.

Apart from that, my name tells you how much I like my food

I picked chef initially because it's a cool character concept ... a guy who owns a bar. Then eventually we got to REALLY own our own bar. In the player city I'm in you can find 2-8 people in the bar anytime day or night just chatting. And they're all regulars. Who wouldn't enjoy that kind of atmosphere?

The buffs are great and you make decent money as a chef. When food gets its revamp the money will decrease, I expect, due to every schmoo and his brother wanting to play a chef. We'll be the next architects, I fear.

Still, it's a great class and I'm enjoying it. I'm not rich but I probably sell 200k worth of food every week. That's plenty to keep two characters going and all of the other side things I enjoy.

I'm not a Chef and never have been. But I have been playing since launch and using Chefs since then. I'm a retired Master CH and current Master Sharpshooter/Master CH. I love Chefs. I have used many of your different foods and all of them have been great. I enjoy roleplaying and just haning out with Chefs in game. My general experience has been that you guys are a social, fun, and very approachable group of toons. Keep cranking out BOH and CGP. I love 'em both. They make my T-21 specials cost 28 action and 0 mind...woo hoo! I love you guys.
