Hey all--non chef here with a chef question. Do many chefs do custom orders? Due to the ways of the galaxy, most vendors seem to have similar things on them. Is there usually a price difference between custom orders and vendor items?

Some chefs do custom orders. I do not at this time. Many chefs have a hard enough time keeping food on their shelves, let alone trying to fill orders. But some don't mind doing it. As for price adjustments, it varies but in general no price difference.

Oneissue you might run into with a custom order is if the chef doesn't have the required resources. This is especially common with creature resources (most meat types, hide, milk). Now if you could provide those resources, I'm sure you'd get a discounted price. Although that doesn't seem to always work out. I had one customer order four crates of blue milk. I told him if he could get me a 2k stack of milk, I'd do it for free (each crate requires 250 units of milk, so I'd have 1k left over for myself), more milk (or credits) if he wanted casks. Never heard back from him. /shrug.

One other way to do it is to guarantee a minimum on stats. Something you know for sure you can reach and yet is still sellable.

I recently posted an Auction for 10 crates of BE Brandy. The Brandy I am going to sell I have a guarantee on the stats, duration etc. But I will make the best I can even if it is uber stuff and sell at my promised price.

I have made food for folks in exchange for resources such as sciguyCO suggested.

I don't personally takemany custom orders.

Goal1 is to have fun with the professionk, Goal 2 is to have stuff on my Vendor in my Cantina, so it's there when people come and browse. And Goal 3 is to make various foods to help my PA/Faction mates be more effective in PVP. If I'm always filling orders for crates of Brandy, then I won't have time to futz around with the Burst Run foods for our Meleers, the Snow Cake for the Rifleman, the Synthsteak for the Wookiees...

But for me it's more about enjoying the profession than for money, though the profession more than pays for itself as I do it now.

Back in the old days (hehe) even before I was master, I used to do custom orders. Most of those old customers (they all wanted Sunburn, that was before Fishak and Rysh were *in*) still shop with me... but I got burned out quick, on babysitting factories and dealing with the occasional ass hat. Like posters above have said, usually supplying vendors, cantinas, parties and guildies takes up enough time. I do sell brandy now, but my vendor has crates of almost every food, and enhanced stuff when I can get tissues, so I don't really see the point of doing custom orders, even if I wanted to... if I *can* make something, with the resources I have, it's already on the vendor. It's like going to the grocery store and making the manager push your cart and hand-pick stuff off the shelves for you.

i'm an oddball chef, in that so far i've done nothing but custom orders. i figure if they want brandy, they can find that anywhere. i only make brandy for myself and my husband, and one custom order for it--the guy wanted it named 'Scale Moisturizer' as a useful gag wedding gift for a trandoshan friend.

i did get a vendor this week, and put some things on it (yeah, even brandy). i'll see how it goes. so far i only put things on there that i know i'll use if they don't sell, and things i've been specifically asked for.

I would say it all depends on your resources. If you can't make it for your vendor, then don't make it for a custom order. I was asked for some Pikatta Pie, and said I would have some by the beginning of next week. I wouldn't have had any plans to make it if they hadn't asked, yet since they did I figured I'd use up my remaining stacks of milk and make a large batch (+20 crates), which they could buy their 4 or 5 crates from.

The only time I do custom orders is for quite larger orders. I have never really set a minimum but 250k or so probably.

If someone wants something else I'm more willing to actually do a full run of something and just have them buy it off the vendor when I put them up for sale.

Stats on custom foods would probably be worse. I don't have a problem burning 10-15 sets of resources to get a schematic to make 39 crates. I would never do that if someone was only wanting 1 crate.

I actually created a catering vendor just for the idea of custom ordering. I have examples of desserts and entrees on there so people could see what the graphics were and stats and then make a request to me with their order. I didn't place any restrictions on minimum order. but I did talk with the customer first before promising to do anything. If the order was big - I'd charge more for time and effort. If the order was "unusual"...for instance, requiring me to make over 5- items by hand and renaming and (back in the day) coloring them, I charged more.

I created my catering vendor for those who were just looking for "party" desserts or entress named other than what the game chose for quick pick up. I also had and still have wedding cake on my vendor...someone purchased a crate just the other day to my surprise. Sad to say though - not a lot of custom order business lately. I'm not too sad about it though - because it is time consuming (and I'm only a casual player)- and there's lots of pressure to fill the order. And sometimes - the customers are not so nice. But I did cater a couple parties and it was SUPER fun when I was doing it I have to admit.

But as far as just renaming a food for your liking...name a crate of Bivoli to Mind Stim for example...no real price diff there. But if you want SPECIFIC stats that are outside of the norm (see charts and tables stickied at the top of the chef board)...I would suggest you help the chef out to atleast find the resources you need to achieve those stats (ask the chef - they might know in what range the stats for a resource will need to be).

I have a two-crate minimum on custom orders. And I don't charge extra (although some fiends insist on tipping me double). Those interested in custom orders are usually hard-core PvP's wanting to test the limits of their uber-build.

As long as I have the resources, I have no problems doing special orders. I however have a very large varities on my vendor, so just about every useful one is on there.

I take all custom orders. However, the price on such order can range from below normal (a regular customer asking for somthing insignifacnt) to exorbitant (someone who wants something that'll suck up my most valuable resources, wants it experimented in such a way noone else would want it, and wants it right now). I'm up front about the annoyance/inconvenience factor in my pricing... I typically give the customer a choice along the lines of "200k right now, or 70k two days from now. You decide." If they want to pay the premium, I'll drop what I'm doing, stop a factory running something else, and make their food. Most are happy to wait till it better fits into my production schedule.
