Thread: Advice for a Noob Master Chef

Okay, so I did the grinding, and I collected some nice resources along the way. However, the amount of resources, and the quality that is required, is nearly staggering. Especially considering my other profession is Master Tailor; stats don't matter and there is no experimentation.

I am curious how some other chefs that have been around a while collected resources to get started. Did you simply wait until you could gather all the resources before putting up a vendor? Did you buy some or all of the resources? I can't seem to find a resource vendor with good chef resources on my server, so I am left with trying to gather them all.

I would greatly appreciate any advice/tips you might have. Thanks!

Well I've been a chef since the beginning of time, back when factories pumped out one-unit stacks and eating food could kill you. But the advice I'd give a chef just starting out now is the same as how I did it back then. Start with the best you can get now, and price your food accordingly. Some folks simply must have the best, but others are short on money and will take a lesser product if it fits their budget. Then keep an eye on the resource spawns (SWGcraft.com is a site every crafter should visit daily) and when something appears that is better than what you have, throw every harvester you own on it and get your friends to do the same. Now you've just improved your food and built up a stash for the future. If something even better comes along later, do the same and either sell the old resources or keep them as a backup. This way your food just keeps getting better the longer you cook.

My advice to you is sell some of your stuff on the Bazaar Terminal if it is not the quality you want to put on your vendor. MY alt is working on chef 4-3-3-0 and everything I put up gets purchased in two days or less (on Gorath). I make a little bit of everything and I'm sure my stuff is not that great. I have fun making it and it makes me some cash too !

Don't go overboard instantly. If you try to make 20+ different foods your just asking for trouble IMO. Pick out 3-5 and sell them on a vendor. They will probably have to be popular foods. I doubt you would get a huge amount of business if you just put up 3 artisan level foods.

If you are doing well you can add a few more each week or whenever you have time. Selection is great but if your normally out of half the foods you stock, you don't really have a selection. Any vendor I currently go to, I do so because they consistantly have what I want. I may have to go to 2 vendors to get all my weapons, but those 2 vendors will have what I want 95% of the time. That to me is better than going to do vendors and each having a 50% chance at having something I need from them.

This isn't the one and only strategy though, its just the one I prefer.

I am having a similar issue. I just can't seem to find resources good enough for me to want to use. I have some really good fruits and waterand I'm harvesting the really good beans we have right now on Intrepid, but it just seems like it is taking forever to build up enough supplies to make anything worth selling (quality and quantity.) I'm new to the game, but I've seen some of the products out there and compared to what I can make, my stuff is embarrassing. Also being new, I don't have the funds to buy any good resources. I'm starting to get discouraged and second guessing my decision to become a chef.

My advice is put some stuff up on the bazaar. A couple good sellers are brandy and canape. This is a great way to make money and pay for expenses such as power and maintenance on harvesters. Make sure you check www.swgcraft.com often. This is a great place to see when good resources pop on your server. If something good pops, try to get all your harvesters on it. Also, youneed to have artisan survey in my opinion. This is invaluable to you for finding good spots. I have and probably always will have survey 4. I spent a month or so gathering resources before I began (which you may or may not need to do).

The advice above is good about picking out 3 to 5 popular foods. I would go withbrandy, canape, synthsteak, and blue milkfor starters. These will sell without BE enhancements which is important when you are starting out.

Next, find a supplier of meat and a good resource vendor. Make friends with a BE for BE components, and a Tailor for your trim for casks. The resource vendor will supply you with the items you wont have time to mine (power, inert petro and fiberplast for trim, and crystal and amorphous gem for glasses and casks, maybe even water). With the resource vendor make doubly sure to shop around, check the world map and make sure you get your moneys worth.

You will need at least one Food/Chem(a definite must)and one Wearables factory (a nice to have). Food/Chem (I wont explain this one ) and the wearables for your trim. Trust me, you will want to make your trim for casks eventually. It is expensive to buy based on cpu to make and can be a pain to find a tailor stocking it in amounts you need.

As with any crafting profession, plan on taking your time to get your resource stockpiles set up and keep the bazaar stocked with well priced items.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your thoughtful reply. I am fortunate in two ways: 1) I am a master tailor as well, so trim is no problem at all, and 2) the other person in my PA who was working chef for the fun of it decided to drop it all when I made master. So, she gave me all of her resources and BE additives. I still need some good resources, and putting food on the Bazaar is good advice. I will do that, and I will keep an eye on swgcraft.com.
