Thread: Chefs vs. Droid Engineer

1. Business goes good if you pick a server without a lot of competition (most of them, actually). You make the most money selling crates of food, so you spend most of your time huddled around factories.

2. You can't level up by selling stuff. You pretty much have to grind everything. I got my 320,000 odd XP to get to master, and have managed about 5,000 since. Factories seem to only give you XP when thye feel like it (almost never for me). So, the speed of leveling is about as fast as you can grind (I had 6 crafting tools and it took me about 1-2 hours per level of actual grinding)

3. There isn't a whole lot to chef. No fancy ingredients. No loot drop bonuses. It's all about the human interaction, and then there's no RP elements. (Wow, what does keep me going?)

Challenge, it's a challenge (Trying to figure out what stats effect what experimentation, since the schematics lie)

4. Anyone you want, they all have limited number of players willing to deal with chef.

I stole it from someone else that made the form. that thread got locked of course but it was such a good form that I had to past it around.

Gamespy review is also locked:

"Star Wars Galaxies drew me into the game with a combination of a killer license and an incredibly ambitious design. And both are still true, months after release: with a deep player economy, a variety of structures, multiple planets to explore, lots of careers and a whole civil war between players, it remains one of the most ambitious MMOGs since the original Ultima Online. But after several months and intense play I don’t feel the game has quite ‘ripened’ yet. Some elements planned in the design aren’t in there yet, meaning the game doesn’t have the staying power that it should.

My story? Fascinated by the player economy, I started playing as a Mon Calamari weaponsmith. I just wanted to tool around the galaxy finding rare materials and crafting powerful blasters for my friends, hoping to build a little business and get a customer base. It turned out to be a good choice: this part of the game had the most depth and the most polish! Advancing in a crafting career still requires a lot of “grinding” (repetitive work creating items over and over) to gain skill, and while this isn’t fun I don’t have any other suggestions for making sure that there’s not a glut of advanced crafters on the server from day one. I slowly worked my way up in skills, got a crafter friend to build me a shop, furnished it, made some business deals, experimented with pricing until I found products that would move, and had a great time of it. There were some annoying bugs (vendors or factories wouldn’t work right) but they could be worked around.

So, why did I quit playing? The problem is that not all parts of the game were as playable or as deep as the weaponcrafter/businessman angle. Droid crafting was nearly completely broken, which caused a few of my friends to drop off of the game. Meanwhile, if you just wanted to run around and shoot stuff, the lack of game content became brutally obvious after a couple weeks of play. Most of the worlds were empty expanses populated by random monster spawns. There wasn’t a huge variety of missions to take on (and originally, many story-based missions were broke.) Plans the developers had for things like massive installation spawns and dynamic missions really weren’t in the game yet at launch. Many of my friends who were straight-on fighters grew bored of the game and stopped playing.

I was excited about the game’s monthly events, but the first event turned out to be a letdown. It merely asked players to collect three pieces of a disk from killing NPCs. That’s a non-event if you consider the types of things they did in Asheron’s Call, where monthly events might cover the world in snow, unveil new land masses, or destroy whole towns.

A major reason to play MMOGs is to interact with your friends online – as the lack of content drove my friends away, soon I was playing solo most of the time. It was a ripple effect: as my friends left, I started to lose interest. Plus, despite the developer’s intent, I found the game awfully punishing if you didn’t play it every day. Harvestors needed constant attention, factories and homes required constant cash, and if any should disappear on you you’d lose a HUGE investment (my wife stopped playing when her large house and all of its furniture disappeared because she hadn’t been playing for a week.) Items you try to sell, even in your own shop, get pulled from the shelf after a week and disappear completely after two. Constant upkeep of your possessions makes a game feel like a job – and I already have one of those!

But, even though I don’t actively play anymore, I’ve kept my shop around with an “on vacation” sign on the door. Why? Because there’s still a tremendous amount of potential here, and none of the problems I have with the game can’t be fixed over time. More content is being added CONSTANTLY. The towns are springing to life with more missions and more things to do week after week. More options are available to players. Player towns (again in the original design but not yet in the final game) and drivable vehicles are on the way. The core game in Galaxies is very, very good and gets better with age. You can bet I’ll be back as I learn of new content, and hopefully I can drag some of my friends back along for the ride as well...

I'm new to this forum so first I want to take the time to say Hi to all ten of you chefs.

I was interested in learning about the following in the chef profession:

  1. How does your business go? In other words, what do you sell and where do you sell it?

  2. How much time does it take to level up?

  3. Is it worth it?

  4. If you suggest I join your cause then what server should I play on?

Currently I'm a droid engineer on the Naritus server.I was thinking about starting another account on a different server and was just wondering if being a chef was as worthwhile and fun as being a droid engineer (minus the bugs). I enjoy working my way through SWG in an odd profession that is not often chosen and thought that chef is the most odd and underappreciated as you can get.

Your thoughts on thisnovice and master chefs.

1. Business blows, unless it's almond crisps for cheap pet food, tatooine sunburns, and a few master chef items. I generally don't make enough to keep myself a float, but close.

2. It's a lot of grinding to get to the first box 32k xp and about 40 xp per item. All in all very slow leveling of countless hours grinding the same useless item. The most xp I can get is 178 xp per item that doesn't have any components.

3. I think it isn't worth as much time I sank into it, but since I'm so far I mise well stick with it. People generally remember you and order large amounts of food in crates. But because of the bug with the foods, business has been very slow.

4. No idea

If you don't mind a slow going crafting class that gets broken more and more as patches goes through and ignored generally by the devs. Then I think that chef is the perfect profession to be in.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks for your responses.

The more I hear that devs don't care about chefs the more it makes me want to be one LOL. I'm also a rebel right now so I think I'm going to be an imperial chef on my next account...if I ever create one that is.

If I do create another character and make him imperial then I'd love to make poisoned food for rebels. hahahahahhahaha

I dont think they dont care, they do

Perhaps they dont care as much as for some other aspects of the game

There was a poll recently asking what you wanted them to work on and I myself voted for more content. So I cant really complain that it takes them a while to fix bugs

There are two major issues

1) the buff bug which utterly invalidates the whole profession. But like any debugging one wants to take the single card out of the House of Cards without making any of the other ones fall over. Still I hope this is a priority, imagine the outcry if guns stopped working. It's a really bad bug and completely unfair on us chef players

2) the rebalancing exercise which needs to take time. If they just make chefs really powerful then super-buffed TKAs and Commandos might be utterly unstoppable. It also widens the gaps between the haves and the have-nots. More issues than a straightforward bug fix
