I was crafting food last night and I noticed when I experimented to make the duration of foods last longer, the negative side effects were also in creased in duration. What's up with that? Shouldn't successful experimentation only make food better?

Only thing I could think of is it increased the stack, but decreased the quality...

however, is that even possible? the world.. may never know....

Well, it when experimenting, it doesn't matter which boost is Neg or Pos if you are upping duration. But if you up the buff, it lowers the negative effect.

sometimes I et critical failures that take away the negitive effects and boost the positive ..

Most likely that's included because on some foods with low negatives (like veghash) experimenting on the nutrition gets the negatives over zero, so it becomes a buff. Plus, they probably want to keep the [air quotes]balance[/air quotes] on the drawbacks so they don't get too [air quotes]over powered[/air quotes].
