I am considering going chef (already have a +11 suit!) and have been reading these boards gleening info.
One thing i dont understand is the demand for plates and barrels. From what i understand, these would make the uses of each food/drink larger.
Wouldn't this mean that your customer would need less and less crates from you as the uses for each individial item grows larger?
If synsteak grows for 6 uses to 20, a crate will last (about) 4 times as long. Wouldn't this mean a extremely large drop in sales? I know you can just charge more for the extra uses, but once the average shopper sees the price go 4x, he might think twice.
Jedi holds no interest to me and combat is starting to lose its draw. Crafting has always been a hobbie of mine, so why not try out chef?
Tell me if i missed anything or i am missing the point of these plates and barrels

Well, as a Chef who also does combat, I can say that having larger stacks would help out to some degree, if for no other reason than to take up less space in your backpack for food items.
However, as a businessman I can say that if barrels ever were to be fixed, I would charge a good deal more for them than I would for a comparable amount or liquid in casks. Barrels would only be a convenience for the customer, and since they would provide a good deal more servings, you can bet that I will charge a good deal more for them as well. While it is true that they do not require that many more resources than casks, it would affect my profit over time.
So sure, barrels can be fixed....but I wouldn't really want them to be. I dont think there is a need, and there are quite a few other issues that should be fixed ingame LONG before a fix like this were even considered.

Plates would be nice. As it stands, there are two functional containers that increase drink quantity - Large Glass and Cask. But the only way to increase the quantity of food is a Food Additive or spending experiment points (and it takes A LOT of points to make any difference).

Agreed. I hit on the barrels point, and forgot to mention that I didnt have a problem with plates. Plates would be very helpful, even if they only increased the stack size slightly.

Plates would be nice, because some of the larger sellers of food are very small quantities. Ahrisa is 3, Vercupti is 2, Bivoli is 2-3, Thaktillo is 2. I would even be happy with just a general increase in stack sizes for those foods. Just because it is higher up in the chef line I don't see why it should be a smaller stack. They should be harder to make, but that should come int he forum of the ingredients. Not the ingrediants and the stack size.
Barrels I don't know about. I know I don't have enough skill points to get MA, so making barrels would be a huge pain.

I would LOVE to see barrels and plates working. Being a chef isn't just about getting rich for some of us. I like to make the best things I can possibly make, which is why I buy only the best resources I can find (or mine any that come up) and experiment over and over and over until I get my desired result.

Thanks for the feed-back guys.
And BTW: I am not becoming chef to get rich (infact i am roughly 6 million in the hole from chef resources/SEAs, 14 million total but that will soon change! muwhahaha) . I have plenty of money as it is and tons of easily liquidated items. I am only doing this for my guild part-time. If i like it and i make a little money, so be it!

One benefit that you do get from larger containers (barrels, the theoretic plates for food) is the ability to maximise the BE additives you get. For drinks, you can actually get a decent profit margin using small glasses (10 gemstone vs. 100 crystalline gemstone + 2 trim) and possibly get more frequent business. But to provide high buff sizes, using small glasses triples the number of BE tissues you have to buy.
errr, yes?
Like i said, I am not even novice chef and am currently trying to learn about it. If you could be a little more clear (dumb it down for me basically
) that would be great. From the sound of it, your post looks like what i was looking for, but i cannot understand it!

I am not looking forward to barrels being fixed. I hate making the artisan components. Easier to get the trim, just two resources. Also everyone is a min/max player. As soon as barrels go in, casks are gone basically. Also price will go up, but not to the point where we see the full benefit. The end user will see most of the benefit. Do a per cost use of brandy and ahrisa, you'll see what I mean.
