In the new patch, they say something about HAM balancing - and I read that mind will be less of a factor. Will that make Vasarian Brandy obsolete? Anyone's thoughts / opinions?

i'm not sure exactly. i did hear something about this as well.. but my understanding was, and correct me if i'm wrong (i usually am), that they were going to make mind less of a factor when damage is figured in? i'm not sure if they're going to eliminate the mind cost of special movies... anyone else have any info on this? i'm probably not correct...

My guess is that they are adding the ability to heal the mind pool with stims, so attacks targetting the mind pool will not necessarily be more effective than health/action attacks. This would take away one of the main things that distinguishes the mind pool from the others, but mind buffs would still be just as important. As long as doctors don't get mind enhance packs, I don't think it will affect chefs. But this is just speculation - I really haven't kept up with what they are doing at all.

Depending on what they do, this might be the end to Brandy as a must-have for combat. But I wouldn't go so far as to say it is the end of chef's usefulness. We do after all have several dozen other things we can make.

Where'd you see HAM mentioned with the new patch?I've been having login problems, soI might've missed some stuff for the new patch(publish 8, announced going live next week), but there was a "HAM balance" a while back that got pulled because it wasn't effective without the creature/weapon/special balance. I'm pretty sure thats when all the changes got lumped into one big "combat revamp" planned for a couple publishes out.

The major change I remember is that specials won't really "damage" your HAM pools. The point cost comes off the maximum value, and regenerates at a much faster rate than white damage does.

So if you have 900/900 in your pool and execute a special costing 50 points, you're at 850/850. Then you take 100 points of damage putting you at 750/850. Then you do the special again, putting you at 750/800. After a short period of time, the max builds back up, putting you at, say, 810/900 (regenerated 10 damage and regained the initial 50 that got knocked off when the max droped). Spamming specials too recklessly would make you easier to kill since you're dropping your total pool size, but you're not really "damaging" yourselfwith your own attacks.

I would expect buffs to usage stats (strength/quickness/focus) would still be just as useful. Pool stats might even be more useful (depending on how the special costs get tweaked), since a higher pool would allow more specials before getting too low. And if the "special regen" is tied to constitution/stamina/willpower, those stats would still want buffing.

The "mind being less of a factor" comment may have simply been regarding the fact that unhealable mind damage will no longer occurfrom executing specials. A combat class with most of the special costs in health and action can rely on medics to keep them in fighting form, but except for Blue Milk or CM's "mind heal" skill (which gives the CM some pretty serious wounds) there wasn't anything equivalent for others.

I poked around the Dev Tracker and couldn't find anything about this HAM balance coming up soon, did I miss something? Or was it a player post?

I hadn't heard anything about healing the mind pool with stims. Where did you pull that info from? All I've read is what Sciguy said - a change in the HAM costs (degens from specials) as a part of the combat rebalance.

The funny part about chef is that both before and after the "chef revamp" there's still maybe 6-7 foods that are in demand, and the rest fall by the wayside. They *could* be useful, with tweaks, or if the 6-7 weren't so much more desirable. It was exactly the same before the "revamp" too. And back then, it was the big-time PvPers that figured it out first - hey, even this gimpy food gives us an EDGE, and then they made us rich. So no, the combat revamp won't hurt our sales any more than the chef revamp did (take that as you will). People will always want their uberness edge.

My comment about mind healing is just a guess, but I think it makes sense. The primary thing that distinguishes the mind pool from the health/action is that it cannot be healed. The inability to heal mind damage used to be a big issue for the medical professions (I don't know if it still is, but I expect the combat rebalance was started some time ago anyway). The dev's apparently saw some validity in the complaint because they did respond by giving combat medics a mind heal, but they made it cause mind wounds because there needs to be some limiting factor to prevent an infinite healing loop. Under the current system there isn't much else they can do, but with the new HAM system a mind heal would not be as problematic (can't heal away the cost of performing a heal). So when they say they are addressing the issue of the mind pool being so important, I think it means they are going to make it healable.

So the worst thing that could happen is we lose chefs who grinded and grinded to make 1 item? Or better yet our customers are forced to experiment with other food combos, forcing us to experiment differently to CREATE food combos? oh heavens, what next!?!?!?

This idea comes from when it was said that mind will not be a special dmg type anymore or something very close to that. The only reason you can't heal mind with stims is there is no penalty then, you heal yourself and the penalty is that you could just heal yourself again. Since specials won't dmg dmg to you, they will lower your total value, a stim wouldn't be able to heal the penalty of using a stim.

This is just a guess, but it isn't an impossible thing. In Beta stims healed all 3 pools just like pet stims do. It was taken out only at the very end I believe.

I think in general buff will become less required. You will still get a bonus from them but it might not be the night and day difference it is now. You can take on virtually anything with buffs and food right now. That will still be the case, but the fight will take a lot longer. You won't be able to just spam specials. At least that seems to be what the devs want.
