Thread: New Chef Some questions

Just recently I switched from being a novice Bounty Hunter to Chef/ Merchant. Yeah, I know... pretty huge career switch. I just got tired of destruction and figured a peacfulArtisan-type career might be more my style. Anyways, so far I am having fun, and just got Novice Chef last night.

Now here are some questions for the community (be kind... before last week I knew nothing of crafting):

- I havn't been able to figure out how to experiment. I know I have points to do so, but I can't seem to find the option while crafting. How the heck does one experiment?

- I have a small house and am on the verge of opening a store. What items besides Tatooine Sunburn should I expect to sell?

- I bought a flora harvester and found a good place to plop it down, but I cannot seem to make it work. I know I am being a total nimrod and missing something obvious...

- Are factories still bugged?

- I can never seem to find another Chef on my server (Tarq) to learn from. Am I doomed to buy my skills from the vendor? Anyone else have this problem?

- What is the deal with Wheat? A friend asked me to make him a birthday cake, and I spent about 2 hours searching for a place to harvest wheat. I even jumped planets with no luck. In the end I got fustrated and bought some from the Bazaar. Was I just monumentally unlucky or is wheat just really rare?

Thanks, and sorry for the stupid questions.

To answer:

- I havn't been able to figure out how to experiment. I know I have points to do so, but I can't seem to find the option while crafting. How the heck does one experiment?

You must be using the appropriate tool (not generic) for the item you are crafting AND be near a crafting station (or droid) of the appropriate type. For Food, this means that you must be using a Food and chemical tool, while near a food and chemical crafting station (public or private or droid)

- I have a small house and am on the verge of opening a store. What items besides Tatooine Sunburn should I expect to sell?

Any item will sell, in my experience, if it is of good quality and offered at the right price, to the right person. I find that Pet owners love quality Meatlump (as do some brawlers).

- I bought a flora harvester and found a good place to plop it down, but I cannot seem to make it work. I know I am being a total nimrod and missing something obvious...

You will need to pay somemaintenance, and deposit some power. Also, in the operations screen, select the resource you are farming, then turn it on.

- Are factories still bugged?

Yes, somewhat

- I can never seem to find another Chef on my server (Tarq) to learn from. Am I doomed to buy my skills from the vendor? Anyone else have this problem?

Often, but that is more timing than anything else. We are not a large community (though NOT the smallest, I believe). If you can find someone, train. If you can't wait, you may get lucky. Personally, I've trained all my skills (3) from the Chef trainer, so far. I've had bad luck. On the other hand, I have taught a skill to another Chef, at one point.

In the end I got fustrated and bought some from the Bazaar. Was I just monumentally unlucky or is wheat just really rare?

Again, this is luck. I've not found a problem with wheat, yet. Although a decent source of Talusian Domesticated Rice is currently eluding me.

Welcome to the chef profession, hope you enjoy your stay

--- I havn't been able to figure out how to experiment. I know I have points to do so, but I can't seem to find the option while crafting. How the heck does one experiment?

To experiment you must be near either a public food & chemical crafting station, or a personal food & chemical crafting station. You cannot experiment with using a crafting tool. You gain more experimentation points the higher your cooking skill is.

--- I have a small house and am on the verge of opening a store. What items besides Tatooine Sunburn should I expect to sell?

I have always tried to keep in stock all food and drink which buff the regen stats (Willpower, Constitution and Stamina)like Dweezil, and Meatlump. I usually try to keep food which grants either bonuses to many stats, like Ryshcate, Corellian Fried Icecream and Felbar (you won't have access to most of these off the bat, but you can work towards them).

--- I bought a flora harvester and found a good place to plop it down, but I cannot seem to make it work. I know I am being a total nimrod and missing something obvious...

First off with the harvester you need to have power and credits placed inside. The small harvesters use 600 powerand 720 creds per day. Once you have the maintenance paid, now you open up the harvester, and select what resource to gather. Once that is done, simply turn the harvester on.

--- Are factories still bugged?

yes

--- I can never seem to find another Chef on my server (Tarq) to learn from. Am I doomed to buy my skills from the vendor? Anyone else have this problem?

There should be a couple of chefs on every server by now, but for me I've had to train all my dessert skill from the trainers, but was able to obtain my cooking skills from other players.

--- What is the deal with Wheat? A friend asked me to make him a birthday cake, and I spent about 2 hours searching for a place to harvest wheat. I even jumped planets with no luck. In the end I got fustrated and bought some from the Bazaar. Was I just monumentally unlucky or is wheat just really rare?

All resources change every couple of weeks, or every couple of days... it's totally random. Sometimes there might not be a reliable source of wheat on a specific planet for a period of time. You have to keep looking around.

Hope this helped

Hey wow, thanks for the quick responses!

Ok, my experimenting problem is aparently that I am still using my generic crafting device and not a chem/food one. Hehe, I know it was something simple like that.

As far as the Harvester goes, you guys said to put some energy into it. Does that mean I should set up a wind farm or something?

Thanks again!

continuing with the new chef questions:

I'm about to get my first level 1 tier skill

what should it be in terms of ease of grinding (i tire of wastril bread) and in terms of sales (what has good buffs that sells well)?

Personally, I went the Mixology route because I wanted to get to Tatooine Sunburn as quickly as possible--the buff on that is around +1500 to both strength and stamina, and since I've started making them, I can't keep them in stock. BUT you don't get it until Mix 2.

The other way to go would be Entrees--I believe (don't quote me on this) that you get Stewed Gwouch (sp?) which yields about 100 xp.

The route I took was Wastril Bread thru novice, then Deuterium-pyro through Mix 1 (which gets you around 90xp), then Ithorian Mist all the way thru Mix 4. Ithorian Mist is fantastic, it only takes water, wheat and corn and nets you almost 200 xp. Saved me a lot of clicking, I'll tell ya.

Some people go the Entree 1 route and then grind on Stewed Gwouch. I decided that since Mix 2 was where I was going to make enough money to be able to move up the tiers I went ahead and did Wastril until I hit Mix 2 then I could make the Sunburns to make money and I was able to use Ithorian Mist to grind. It just depends on what you want to do. I currently have Mix 2 and Cooking 2 and I am starting to miss having some better foods items.

Djen,

There are several Chefs on Tarq. I am on Tatooine and usually online 10 to Midnight EST. I would be happy to train you in what I know, which is Entrees I, Mix II, Cooking II.

You can set up a wind generator, but you have to keep it filled with maintenance money too, so it can be a bit pricey. Your only other options are buying energy from the bazaar, or other players, or setting up a Mineral harvester to grab some radioactive metal which can also be used as a power source.
