In case any of you were wondering, TH has posted their first communication about the Combat Upgrade over in the "In Development" forum.

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Developers&message.id=52153

It is very high-level (read: no details, a decent dose of spin), but here'sa few nuggets:

  1. Initial alpha testing (the correspondant + 5 picks sandbox) starts in a few weeks.

  2. Several weeks after that begins a closed beta. A registration page is available if you want to try this out. This would probably be roughly late December / early Jan (TH's words: after the holidays)

  3. A while after that, Combat Upgrade changes are pushed to TestCenter for free-for-all.testing

The design docs may or may not get publicly posted until the Open beta period, but they will be made available to the alpha / beta testers.

Oh, and Higginsis: regarding your post in that thread, all previous beta cycles have always included expanding the tester base from the previous round, so since you're in alpha you should automatically be in beta. I'll double check, though.

Well this is great news for the game. All I will be requesting of the Sandbox team is the following:

Please stress the fact that we as a crafting community (and mainly chefs) need a heads up about food/drink changes well before it goes live. I dont want it just dumped on my lap. With all of us basically harvesting and collecting very specific resources for the current game...I dont want to be left in a situation where they are now not as useful in the changed game.

I have already begun collecting resources to counter this. But alas, I really do not want to be blind sided by any drastic changes. It wont be fair to the community at all if the former happens.

Some might suggest I'm coming off to strong to fast...dont worry they might say too. Lets just say I like to be prepared

I signed up for the Beta and if accepted would be happy to help out test I am seriously hoping this revamp makes alot more of our food/drink more appealing/usefull. I don't see them changing the resource requirements though.

Well, while it's under NDA, we won't be able to release anything. But with this eventually going to TestCenter, you'll get a chance to check it out for yourself (even if you don't get lucky with the "closed beta" acceptence). Since this is less marketing driven than JTL (which they had to convince people to buy), it wouldn't surprise me if there was a more even split between the "closed" and "open" parts of the beta. JTL was closed beta for about six weeks, and on TC for a week or two. With such a massive change to everything, I'm hoping for something like 3 weeks on TC with every player being able to provide input for the final polish.

For what it's worth, I'm not really expecting any new additions, and I see no reason to change the resource requirements of existing foods. The stats of the foods will likely change (buff size, buff duration, maybe filling, possibly stack size), and I'm hoping we might be able to get some cosmetic bugs fixed (the incorrect experimentation percentages, useful food descriptions in the crafting tool, etc) but with the focus being on how our stuff effects combat, since Brandy uses fruits and berries now, it'll probably use the same after the revamp upgrade.

These are just some educated guesses, not based on any specific Dev feedback. So if it turns out to be wrong, try not to hold it against me (and I will work on getting info on resource changes released as far ahead of time as possible).

I am sorry guys...perhaps I was not artful enough when wording my post. (sometimes I hate this medium of communication).

My concern is basically the combat revamp and how it will effect what foods we craft and sell. This will have a huge impact on the resources we as chefs have been collecting for months.

We need to know ahead of time what this revamp will be doing to the game. It just wont be fair if they plop the changes on us. I think its a good guess that we wont need the huge amount of berries and fruits we currently have. Mind wont be the deciding factor in PvP I am guessing.

But still...I am guessing. And I dont want the time, effort and money I have invested in my current resource stocks to suddenly be valued less. By changing the combat game they are changing our menus. I want to know well in advance what those changes will be so I can better prepare for them.

I think it would be a good idea right now to start stocking up on the other foods/drinks you feel will be affected by new combat changes. Personally, I feel Mando wine will be a new best seller based on what I've heard about the upgrade, but untill these changes go in, we won't have any idea. Like Sciguy said, once this hits test, we will have the ability to see whats going on. I'm just hoping I get into Beta so I can see whats usefull, whats not

Chefs are not alone in this. Armorsmiths are probably even more affected. I am guessing composite won't be the end all of armors. It will still be useful, but chitin for example may be more useful in other ways.

Realize though that unless you getin closed beta, your not going to know ahead of time to start collecting x resource because it was just made a very useful food. I seriously doubt they will instantly make 1 food just godly. I would like to see a much more balanced buff on many of the defensive and offensive foods.

On mind foods. Even after the revamp, HAM costs on weapons and armor are going to matter. I'm still probably going to eat Ahrisa or drink brandy to decrease my HAM costs(assuming of course focus affects HAM costs). I'm still going to want a decent size mind bar compared to my health and action bars. Doc buffs will still be buffing those 6 bars I am guessing.

Making mind not be the one target in PvP doesn't mean noone will want to buff mind. They only want to buff mind because doc buffs deal with the other 6 far better than any chef food currently.
