Chef Archive

I'm a bartender in training. That's my goal--tending bar. I'm not here to play at being uber, or at wearing a fancy title or anything. I want to run and tend a bar.

I've got no interest in pastries or side dishes or braised rack of anything. I want to mix the perfect drink and I want to provide what folks order. My ax for grinding is that I gotta learn the art of souffles and other dainties just to complete my collection of drink recipes. Now who does THAT make sense to?

Let's think about how becoming the master of something works--first, you learn the basics, you ramp up, THEN, once you've mastered all the recipes, forms, plays, stances, etc, or whatever, that's when you work on bringing it all together. So what are two drinks doing at the final level of chef certification? Heck, that's when you should be learning the finer points of presentation not the basic recipe for what any yokel off the street might order.

Let's make sense, here...

Somebody who wants to be a baker might make the same arguement...why do they need to learn how to mix drinks just to get all the recipes they want?

So what benefits do you think a master chef should have if they don't have recipes that are specific to the master chef?

Well, seems to me, someone who's gone all that way, mastered so many different varieties of food production, ought to have a really strong idea of what goes into a good dish--they should be the ones more than any others, who should be able to experiment, customize, improve. It's the world class chefs that create the new masterpieces--they should be the ones who get the lion's share of the experiementation points--you know, the ones NONE of us have yet, but should.

It the way withpretty much all professions except the advanced combat profs though - why does someone that want's to make the best guns need to know how to craft swords? Why does a bounty hunter need to know how to use a pistol in order to get the best carbine special move?

Is just the way of the world

Because the profession you are mastering is not Master Bartender, its Master Chef. That profession means you must learn a wide variety of skills.

Perhaps they should have used a looser skill system where you only learned skills and master indivdual things, but instead they chose to make a profeesion a grouping of various similar skills.

Thus a master weaponsmith is a master of making all weapons, not just blasters.
